US Airways Group Inc. saw the airline industry's second-largest decline in full-time employees in the last four years.

The number of full-time workers at the carrier, which operates its largest hub at Charlotte/Douglas International Airport, has fallen nearly 23 percent to 20,400 from July 2003.

Collectively, the seven network carriers reduced their full-time employee headcount 14 percent in the same time period.

Northwest Airlines Corp. (NYSE:NWA) had the biggest percentage loss in full-time employees. It has reduced its work force nearly 25 percent to 29,200 since July 2003. Continental Airlines Inc. (NYSE:CAL) was the only network carrier to gain full-time staff in that period, with a 3 percent increase.

America West Airlines' full-time employment has grown 15 percent to 12,500 in the four-year period. America West and US Airways merged in 2005 but still operate as two airlines under the Federal Aviation Administration. They will begin reporting as a single operation later this year.

Arizona-based US Airways (NYSE:LCC) has made up some its recent employee loss in the last year. From 2006 to 2007, it had the second-largest gain in full-time employees -- a 6.4 percent increase.

It was behind Delta Airlines Inc. (NYSE:DAL), which saw an 8 percent gain. The number of full-time employees at the network carriers collectively rose 1.5 percent in the last year.

US Airways operates 3,800 flights per day to more than 230 destinations in the United States, Canada, Europe, the Caribbean and Latin America.
