US and WN fight over PHL Gate Space

So, during the summer, US wants to tie up extra gates for less than 4 flights/day.

Add additional space, use what you have better, or go back to the mobile lounges.

I think part of the airports problem is our flights are seasonal. I have always believed our seasonal European routes should be flown year round but at reduced frequencies. Instead of 2 767's operating PHL to VCE and BCN daily have one 767 operate PHL-BCN 4 days a week and VCE 3. Another 767 could fly GLA 4 days a week and ARN 3. The often discused SNN/DUB route become a round-robin PHL-SNN-DUB-PHL. I see MXP is coming back in Dec now so there are many options that would use more of the gates year round and I believe, especially with cargo still make money on these routes. Just my two cents.

Does US have long term leases in PHL or are they paying month-to-month? If it's the latter, then Southwest will have no problem getting the gates IMO.

I know if I was working for PHL's airport authority, I would rather have more flights from a carrier that does what it says it's going to do than one that says one thing and does another. Worse yet, a carrier that says one thing and then blames it on the airport when things go wrong due to their ineptitude.

Loyalty? Yeah, mine is slipping. Keep screwing your employees, Tempe. See how much sympathy you get.

why don't they just knock down the old intl terminal by runway 17/35 and build wn it's own terminal ? i mean do you really need that big blue buildong there?. what is it used for anyway? parker said he does not care what they do with sw . we can compete with sw as we do in phx and las. it's delta being moved to the a gates that he is not wanting to happen. he has even said they could built sw a whole new terminal for all he cares.

If
I'm Not Mistaken. Didn't US Pay For Most of The A- West Terminal? If We Did Than I Say SCREW WN!!

I think a lot of it has to do with perception and POV.

The US POV is that they will be providing NEW service to a destination not currently served from PHL, while SW will be providing service to a market that currently has service.

The SW POV is that they will be providing more low cost service for the PHL market.

Now, considering the problems the airport already has at it's current operating capacity, how much damage will those additional European flights cause compared to a 40th daily flight to Chicago or a 16th daily flight to Orlando?

700W,

as we know, going back to CH11, when Southwest was trying to get gates/space in PHL, the city was just trying to protect their behinds in case US Airways disappeared.

So they agreed to "X" amount of gates/space for Southwest in return for "X" amount of flights...

I believe we all know the management of Southwest; smart, forward looking...having a plan, executing the plan.

And now, Southwest is cashing in...gates etc. If they do not get these gates, how much do the City of PHL have to pay to this forward looking management? That is, IMHO, what's going on...

Hopefully Parker can keep them (PHL & LUV) at bay... 🙂

Can somebody just tell me why PHL would rather have more domestic flights than more international flights?

I think phllax states it very well.

The bottom line is that the A-gates were designed to handle international traffic. Since DL has no plans to fly TA from PHL, they have no business over there (especially when US has committed to international expansion). US and PHL built a $400 million terminal so that there would be room for expansion, not so that they could move domestic flights over there and redeploy the mobile lounges less than five years later.

Building a new WN termianl by 17/35 sounds like a good idea at first but, it will just mean more delays since there will be 40 or more additional WN flights. How many flights to PVD, MDW, BNA, MCO, etc does PHL really need, anyway?

One more thing: Does anyone know what PHL actually promised WN when they came to PHL? I thought they promised them up to 8 gates, but if they promised them 10+ gates, PHL appears to be in a situation where they counted their chickens before they hatched.

Just my 2 cents.

the problem we have here is that phl thought us was a goner. they never imagined that airways would survive so they promised the world to wn. but guess what? airways is alive and kicking and isn't going anywhere. so wn better live with it or pull out and go somewhere else.

Come on now, we can all get along.

Now, Can you blame the airport covering it's bases with the dire straight the company was in a few years ago? Also can you blame WN holding the Airport to it's promises.

Who knows what's going to happen in PHL. Whatever happens though U's always going to be the Big Dog there for a long time. Our sixty or so flights isn't going to make a dent there at U's bottom line at all.

Hi wnbubbleboy,

are you guys going to double the number of flights in PHL, to around 120'ish? (Just some of the rumors out there 😉

Yeah, I agree, let's just get along... 🙂
