US Employee Attire & Grooming Standards

Honestly the number of excuses for not taking pride in your appearance would be laughable if it weren't so sad.

It makes no difference what your position inside/outside whatever, your uniform should be clean and pressed; your hair combed, if you have facial hair it should be neat and trimed otherwise clean shaven. Women should have combed hair, tasteful make-up, a clean and presed uniform as well.

Forget about all your excuses and take pride in yourself. It shouldn't require a Supervisor to tell you you look bad, a look in the mirror should do the trick

Each agent sees his/hers supervisor and shift manager everyday, there is a pre-shift meeting, if he wasnt in compliance it would have been addressed.
lol, What airline do you work for? Oh yeah, that's right...This pre-shift meeting you speak of is a strange concept to me.

Given the fact that it was DCA and the agent was not in regular uniform top or bottom, there's a good possibility that he was a newhire waiting on uniforms. There are/were quite a few items depending on your size that seem to be on backorder. I'm sure DC needs the help more than they need help in uniform. Sorry it ruined your trip.
I was once stuck in DCA on a very busy weekend. For some inexcusable reason, the departure/arrival monitors were down just about the whole time. While checking my options on a computer at an empty gate a line formed in front of me. Mostly just people that wanted to confirm gates and departure times, some nonrevs, etc. I helped them as best I could, or told them which line to stand in if I couldn't. Most seemed glad just to have some attention paid to them. I had on blue shorts a white tee and my employee badge. My checked bag was already at my destination you see. For this I submit myself to the judgement of the shuttle elite.

If USAir was very strict on uniforms, could this be used as a way to reduce the more senior/expensive employees?
Yes, it would also be a way to reduce our monthly DOT rankings.

I work in a blast furnace. I dress for practicality and safety.

You apparently have never worked outside in a subtropical city like Charlotte, try running bags, or climbing in and out of bins with high temps and humidity. I am sure your hair will look just spiffy and the pleats on your uniforms will be crispy..Sure there is no reason to come to work looking sloppy but after 4 or 5 flights you may not look cut and clean...

Took a Shuttle flight from DCA the other day and was surprised and disappointed with the appearance of the gate agent working my flight. The agent wasn't wearing a formal uniform, rather just a US logo T-Shirt that was not tucked in and Dockers. It also appeared the 40-45 year old male agent hadn't shaved or combed his hair. Why would US allow their employees at one of their most important airports, Washington Reagan to look unpresentable in front of customers? Any respectable airline would enforce strict dress codes and provide employees with a real uniform.

Josh

Ohhh, I don't know. Recently I saw Delta employees wearing jeans and a DL polo shirt. Perhaps it was casual day or employee appreciation day!

Question: If you have a problem with an employee's appearence, why not ask the employee why his appearence offends you. Spare me the professionalism c*ap. Ask their supervisor or possible area manager. Maybe there is a justifiable reason. If not go through the chain of command rather than speculating nonsense on these forums! :angry2:

I know from the description who Josh is talking about. He is a very good agent despite the way he may look. Our uniform is such that you can either look sharp or like you just rolled out of bed. It is about personal pride.

And yes, I was once the "middle management" that had to address uniform issues with 400 flight attendants...........good luck!!! As soon as the aircraft door closes, certain people do whatever they want anyway. A Supervisor cannot follow these people around 24/7 to ensure they are uniform compliant.

Josh obviously has never had to work in an environment where the most important task of your day does not include being the "uniform police". Perhaps Josh doesn't know that the pilot that flew him safely to his final destination is wearing what looks to be a track suit.....yes, he is based in DCA too!!!!
