US has suspended its ticketing and baggage interline agreement with VARIG, a Star Alliance partner. (Suprising that this is allowed under alliance rules). I wonder if VARIG's days in *A are numbered? Who would replace it as a Latin American member.

Maybe plans are in the works for US Airways!

Maybe it is not Varig who is being replaced......
Trust me when I say that US suspending the RG ticketing agreement is nothing compared to what the other partners have done to RG. RG owes money to many members right now and is not too popular right now.

Partner or not how much would you let a family member take advantage of you.

BTW we are not leaving *A. The only way that will happen is if we are involved in another merger.

Comprende 😉

I imagine the real worry is that Varig's days, period, are numbered. U (and other airlines) probably just want to minimize their exposure to the damage from Varig's implosion.

It wasn't too long ago that conventional wisdom was that USairways days were numbered. Did the Star Alliance partners distance themselves from USAirways? (Really, a genuine question...not a snide rhetorical...for a change.)

I don't think so. But I don't think U curtailed most of its operations at any point, as Varig has done. It makes interline ticketing and bag checking a headache for partners if you don't know from one day to the next what flights will be operating.

Most partners and other airlines were not accepting any tickets on RG stock. I don't know if that is still the case.

RG owes US, and many other carriers, for tickets plated on their stock and travel on interline partners. Seems their struggle is worse than US was a couple of years back. Look for them to BK or cease op's very soon.

They're already in CH.11 and were very close to CH.7, VarigLog bought them and I haven't heard any more about it. I have a friend that works for them and he at one point went almost 2 months without a paycheck!!! They've had alot of their fleet repoed.

Hopefully Star will look at bringing in TAM or Gol to serve the Brazilian market and throughout the continent. TACA would also be a nice addition thru Central America.
