Delta continues its attack on our Charlotte and new Ft Lauderdale hub. They are adding service from Atlanta to Hickory and Kinston. Raleigh-Durham is getting new non-stop flights to New Orleans and Tampa Bay. They just added service between Ft. Lauderdale and Raleigh, Greensboro Charleston, Richmond and Norfolk. Delta and Delta Connection carriers will soon offer North Carolina customers a total of 130 daily departures from eight airports - Asheville, Charlotte, Fayetteville, Greensboro/Winston Salem/High Point, Hickory, Kinston, Raleigh-Durham and Wilmington..... In Greensboro the airport is building a new wing for Delta tripling their space. Delta now fly’s the following non-stops from Greensboro:

4 GSO-MCO
2 GSO-FLL
2 GSO-TPA
8 GSO-CVG
2 GSO-BOS
3 GSO-JFK
4 GSO-LGA

Looks like Delta wants us out of business, I’m sure there worst night mare would be for United and Us Airways to get there cost down, get out of BK and merge.
 
DL has all but said explicitly that they can't wait for US to fail. Leo Mullin was a huge proponent of seeing US fail. As a large SE carrier, DL will probably do well on many of these routes. But let's not forget that they, too, have some labor problems. With a workforce that is all non-union(except the pilots), they are struggling with their own morale and internal issues.
 
Is gso really that important for US? Don't we have flights from gso-clt, phl, dca, lga? I know we have gso flights to bos.
 
Kinston will fail, it is too close to RDU and people there have gotten too used to catching a flight out of RDU on WN or one of the carriers matching WN fares.

HKY will probably fail in short order as well. Either US survives and implements GoFares in CLT, or US goes bellyup and you see FL, B6, and maybe WN in CLT. Either way, it is less than an hour's drive, and you don't have to connect in ATL.
 
Delta today signed a lease for a Comair maintenance hangar in GSO. The airport will construct the hangar on 3.7 acres. The final rent amount will be determined after the hanger is constructed and final construction costs are determined, which will likely be about $3 million, said Ted Johnson, executive director of PTI. But as part of the lease, Comair will defer payments for two years, Johnson said.

Construction on the facility should begin this spring and should be completed by the end of the year, he said. The airport anticipates 20 planes a day coming into the hangar.

The company received $212,000 in incentives from the state and Guilford County. Comair plans to hire 53 people.

It's no secret to anyone that DL wants UAIR to fail. As a matter of fact, it's probably what they're banking on to stay out of BK protection themselves. If UAIR pulls through this mess and makes it out of BK at the end of June as CCY is predicting, then it is very bad news for DL. This is, no doubt, why DL is cranking up the pressure - it's an attack launched for their own survival.
 
Delta's entire marketing plan has been based on the failure of US. Even the change of CEO's hasn't curtailed their "knee jerk" marketing. Maybe it's just another "Song".
 
Delta has been trying to drive US Airways out of business for the last 3 years. They are very concerned US Airways will emerge with a cost structure less than Southwest and a large footprint on the East Coast, Caribbean, and Latin America.

Last quarter Delta had the single largest financial loss in history, over $2.2 billion with more than a $900 million operating loss.

Just like with AirTran’s reappearance in Charlotte and Southwest beginning Pittsburgh service, US Airways must have a competitive cost structure to compete. If it does – it will not matter what the competition does.

Actually, I believe DL would much rather have US around then face the alternative. If US goes under, higher-yielding airports like DCA and LGA will be flooded with LCC's. Even CLT (with Indy and possibly Airtran) will remain a relatively high-yield market as long as US controls most of the gates.

DL would much rather compete with a higher cost USAirways (US's costs will NOT be lower than WN), then compete even more all the LCC's.
 
This combined with AirTran's move into Charlotte is just the beginning of what is to come. It's not just Delta that wants US out of business. It is a common goal of all the other airlines that fly in the East. I don't believe US could get it's costs low enough to make money anywhere with this kind of competition.
 
There is no way in hades US will have a lower cost structure then WN, time to take a pee test if you believe that.

IIRC, US still hasn't affirmed or rejected the lease at CLT yet, so while US has control over most of the gates now, it's entirely possible that they might not keep control over as many gates as they currently do, especially if the City knows someone else wants space....
 
CLT is the largest US hub with the lowest costs and the 2nd largest gateway to the Caribbean, US is not giving up and gate space at CLT.
 
How strange some of you are acting like competitive responses are a "new thing", and have only just now come to the realization that DAL would like to assume as much of U's market share wherever possible... :rolleyes:


It is getting kinda old, that so many on here feel the need to wave around anything remotely negative or threatening to our airline's chances for survival/success. And the same "usual suspects" tend to naysay, ignore, or belittle anything that does not validate their vision of a doomed US Airways.

That is why I love the fact that we are still here today, and and still moving forward from here on... Not just for the sake of those here who still contribute and care, but also because I know it bugs the crap outta those that no longer do. :up:
