USAirways/America West Merger Talks -WSJ

In addition to the airlines directly involved, another likely victim of a US/HP merger would be United - UA would lose much of its West Coast pricing power and face an unprecedented squeeze on transcon routes (which the new airline will add like crazy to connect the route networks).

I love that fact that all of you are financial experts. Obviously, mergers can work otherwise it wouldn't happen. This is a positive thing for both sides. Why do we always have to be so sceptical of everything.

will this hurt our relationship with ual ? and star for that matter.

Well, I like AW, so, I hope it happens. I think it will be a good move.

I agree... I think it is a good match and a smart move for both companies...

US Airways is reportedly in advanced talks to merge with Arizona-based America West Airlines.

Citing people familiar with the matter, The Wall Street Journal said in its Tuesday online edition the merged airline would immediately begin flying under the US Airways name but would keep operations separate for a time while the two companies combined aircraft and employees.

America West, US Air may merge into national low-cost airline

MONTGOMERY, Ala. - US Airways Group Inc. and America West are in advanced discussions to merge, creating a national low-cost airline that would better compete with discount rivals and complement each other geographically, US Airways' chairman said Tuesday night.

Bankrupt US Airways has approached several rival carriers about a merger, but discussions with America West have progressed the farthest, Chairman David Bronner said in an interview with The Associated Press.

No deal is imminent, and numerous issues must still be resolved, said Bronner, who also serves as CEO of the Retirement Systems of Alabama, which invested $240 million in the company.

"A lot of things will happen in the U.S. airline industry in the next 12 to 18 months," Bronner said. "We'll do whatever we need to survive."

A spokesman for America West Holdings Corp., America West's parent, declined to discuss what he called a "market rumor."

US Airways, based in Arlington, Va., has been in Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection since September 2004. It was the company's second such filing in two years.

Wait a minute...isn't the stapler an American Airlines pilot's best friend? That isn't going to happen 'if' US and AWA hook up. Fencing yes, stapler no.

Well, I hope they keep the HQ in Phoenix, much cheaper to do business out of there. Plus Mesa HQ is in Phoenix.

And, of course I hope that retirees will still have the flying bennies!

I need to see the numbers of this first, I expect the HP pilots will be all up in arms.
