What's new

USAirways Cargo

Fedex 2 day is a part of their express division which is essentially another company..and to my understanding Fedex ground is only Fedex by name most of those drivers are independent contractors...using the logos and colors but maintain their own trucks, uniforms, gas..and so on..they have routes that are contracted(sometimes multiple) and its operated like managing their own business.
This is actually a very complicated arrangement. Fed Ex Express is all company people. Fed Ex Ground is made up of subcontractors from the days of RPS, but it is almost like they are company people. Each driver owns his route, and his truck, and the company pays the driver for the maintenance, etc. This arrangement exists (and has always existed) to prevent unionization.

Fed Ex Ground packages never come in contact with Express. They are sorted at different facilities, and ground packages do not go on Express vehicles and vice versa.

I used to work for UPS as a Supervisor years ago. The Express operation of Fed Ex is incredible. Very high on time ratio and overall customer satisfaction. Same for Air Freight. The ground operation is not as good. At UPS, we were 100% company people, and the quality is, and was always amazing. Fed Ex Ground has improved over the years, but it is still not as good of a product as UPS Ground.

Not trying to sound negative, but I don't see any chance of Cargo being insourced without a new contract. The Company can easily point to the TA and say "We gave away to you the right to have rampers in house for cargo in PHX, LAS, and LAX, and that's all we were willing to give. If we WANTED to have it inhouse elsewhere we would have offered it.
