Usairways To Expand To Lima, Peru ?

They may note be a Peruvian carrier, but wasn't Lima Eastern and Braniff's Latin American hub point?

According to the former EAL employees that now work the Shuttle at LGA, Panama City was a mini-hub they acquired from Braniff and spoked out to the rest of Latin America using the " 5th freedom rights " which allowed EAL to carry local traffic on thru flights.

Kind of the same way AA had the Caribbean locked up, right?

I don't know. UA never retreated from the Caribbean due to AA's dominance the way they did from S.Am.

Ok riddle me this folks.

Where is Eastern, Pan Am and Braniff now?

Which country is going to negotiate 5 freedom rights for a US carrier to build such a hub?

Was UA's S.Am. retreat a function of competition against AA or simply ceding routes to another Star Alliance member - Varig?

As to retreating from the Caribbean, United flies to what, four islands in the Caribbean. Not much to retreat from...

They are gone, but have'nt you realized yet this industry we are in is just a vicious revolving door ? The fact of the matter is SOMETHING has been or is being talked about between the Lima Authority, UAL and UAIR ! Bloomberg is quite a reliable source even correcting CNBC when they had announced your group had a tentative agreement when they did not! Since they are discussing with BOTH airlines we might as well bring that merger rumor off the back burner and turn up the flame a bit .

Don't you know 320 has the market cornered on merger rumors?

Here is my rumor scenario:

Bonderman provides exit financing for UAL to emerge from bankrutpcy, he makes them stronger and then two years later UAL buy US.

Could be right. According to the internet page on the last days of Braniff, there was a crew base in LIM:

"The Latin American Division gave the first indications that something major was unfolding. Pilots based at the LAD's Miami hub found their flights south on a 'will advise' status. At the crew base in Lima, Peru, LAD pilots were ordered to go to their aircraft, take on fuel for Miami and 'Standby to ferry.'"

A country like Peru that needs to create cash - flow ! Peru is not happy with LAN and even temporarily shut them down back in October for 3 or 4 days over a technocality with wording on their charter to operate there. Bush went there last year and I am sure it just wasnt to discuss the coca crops.

Very true, the fact that AirTran lives today is a testimonial to the willingness of the American consumer to forget about carriers, and a testimonial of carriers being able to remake themselves.

Heck, US remade itself after the 1994 crash season, shed the USScare identity, and made a lot of money in the late 1990s.

Next round of concessions that ALPA will agree to will be to hire South American pilots to fly the planes.

Eventually, ALPA will allow everything to be outsourced and have no one to represent.

Another reason is a country like Peru is forbidden right now to fly their own carrier into the U.S. as is Ecuador. One scenario is maybe as part of the plan is the renewed terminals, runway, and security go up, UAL/UAIR go in and in and in return Peru gets their own airline again with Star Alliance membership. I am sure Lufthansa will reinstate their service to LIM from FRA and if Varig gets their act together, will continue with their feed.

Why is it that every thread turns into a bashfest between 700 and 320? WHy don't you two go out and get some fresh air.

We've actually had an interesting thread running, and leave it up to one of you two to fart in church during the middle of the sermon.
