is AWA still flying JFK to the west coast and DID they fly BOS to the west coast?

Still flying LAX-JFK & BOS

Interesting to note that USAir with their vaunted northeast franchise has never flown transcon from either city.

united Codeshare probably took care of that..........

I don't think that US ever had a very large presence at JFK. LGA on the other hand is big for them in terms of revenue and yield. Just my thoughts.......

coolflyingfool:

US no longer flies to JFK nor does US fly non-hub transcons...

I believe the comment was about AWA... Their route map shows transcons from LAX + some point-to-point flights to Mexico and Canada from LAX, OAK, and SAN

AWA Route Map

US has a huge presence at LGA and DCA, neither of which they are permitted to fly transcon from. They could from BOS, also a big focus city, but never have. Someone correct me if I'm wrong- I know US did fly transatlantic service from BOS at one point but I don't think transcon.

If you look at US's route map, JFK is the one oddball on the east coast not served by them. I think the last time they flew there at all was around 1999/2000. They did at one point have Dash 8 "Champagne" flights, can't remember from where, that connected to British Airways Concorde flight when they were in cahoots with them.

The only non-PHL/CLT/PIT transcons US ever did was BWI-LAX and SFO which ended around 01 or 02. I believe they flew to LA from places like IND, CMH, DAY, and MCI but those wouldn't be considered transcon.

It is strange that the largest east coast airline, and one of the largest in New York, Washington, and Boston has never flown transcon from those cities, but it's a combination of permiter-restrictions at the otherwise more desirable airports, and well-established competition from UA, AA, DL, etc. They have applied unsuccessfully several times for DCA-LAX and DCA-LAS, so they would if they could out of "thier" airports.

We used to fly BOS-FRA from 95-97. When Wolfe took over in 96 we applied to fly from BOS-CDG but it was awarded to AA. AA initially used the route authority to fly BOS-ORY . They later switched to CDG. Also at the time, the BOS terminal was being renovated for expansion. I believe Wolfe applied for BOS-LHR. New International Briefing rooms were built. Shortly thereafter, the UA-US merger was announced and then 911. US has 21 gates in BOS. IMO, they are very under utilized. Hopefully, management will get aggressive and deal with the major expansion planned for JBlue later this year.

I have flown USAir from TPA to LAX. At one point the route was served twice daily. I have time tables from that period and will check to see what other routes were flown.

The Dash 8 was know and marketed by BA as the "Concorde Connector" and flew from DCA-JFK to meet up with the BA concorde and parked at the gate next to the rocket. It was BA's way of keeping the World Bank and IMF people happy when IAD-LHR "rocket" service ended in the earlyish 1990's.

The plan was to do the same in BOS and LGA as in DCA with the 170s when we were still getting two a month. They wanted to go into the business markets like ORD, DFW, IAH, ATL, DTW, CLE etc. Apparently the direct service out of DCA has done well in most markets while going up against the other airlines in thier hubs. BOS is severely underused, US has a huge FF base there, the Shuttle, plus exclusive New England service through Colgan Air, plenty of gates and nice new facilities but otherwise wastes it's space with RJs to seemingly random destinations.

Same goes for LGA. A great terminal to itself, valuable gates and slots, but aside from hub service and the Shuttle it's mostly Express RJs. LGA and BOS were supposed to see alot of MAA growth like DCA did, but that's of course on hold.

US also did LAX-MCO Redeyes 90-91.

US used to do TPA-LAX 2 X daily and TPA-LAS 1 X daily way back when.

"Way back when" we did
LAX-CLE,CMH,IND,MCI,TPA,PIT,BWI,PHL,CLT. The red-eye bank used to be a madhouse.

They also flew Baltimore-Seattle until summer of 2002.

USAirways has never applied for DCA-LAS. The last application round, they have applied for DCA-SFO, and I think DCA-LAX.
