U also did TPA - MEX at the same time they flew to LAX from TPA.

US has a huge presence at LGA and DCA, neither of which they are permitted to fly transcon from. They could from BOS, also a big focus city, but never have. Someone correct me if I'm wrong- I know US did fly transatlantic service from BOS at one point but I don't think transcon.
If you look at US's route map, JFK is the one oddball on the east coast not served by them. I think the last time they flew there at all was around 1999/2000. They did at one point have Dash 8 "Champagne" flights, can't remember from where, that connected to British Airways Concorde flight when they were in cahoots with them.

The only non-PHL/CLT/PIT transcons US ever did was BWI-LAX and SFO which ended around 01 or 02. I believe they flew to LA from places like IND, CMH, DAY, and MCI but those wouldn't be considered transcon.

It is strange that the largest east coast airline, and one of the largest in New York, Washington, and Boston has never flown transcon from those cities, but it's a combination of permiter-restrictions at the otherwise more desirable airports, and well-established competition from UA, AA, DL, etc. They have applied unsuccessfully several times for DCA-LAX and DCA-LAS, so they would if they could out of "thier" airports.

U flew to Germany from BOS (FRA I believe) and we did fly some mainline jets into JFK during the BA/US code share back in the 90's but it didn't last long.

We did have one other transcon if you will from LAX; LAX-MCO and LAX-TPA. The TPA flights were mainly Redeyes and came back in the evening they next day. MCO lasted for a couple of months but for some strange reason we couldn't make money on them.

In the early days after all the mergers were in place, we flew cross country through DAY, IND, CLE MCI, CMH as well as he main hubs of PIT, CLT and what was a small hub at the time PHL.

When did US fly LAX-CLE? I remember all of them except that one.

Dusting off the archives I find in my logbook a 2/26/90 entry: Flt #708 LAX-CLE 4.2 hours. We returned 2/27/90 as Flt #259 CLE-LAX 5.0 hours. Flight 708 is listed as all night time so I imagine it was a red-eye.

If memory serves me right we had quite a few red-eyes leave LAX each night but I can’t remember all of the destinations.

The LAX-CLE and LAX-IND service was when US still used those cities as "mini-hubs" CLE used to have a lot of non-stop service.

We used to have a significant presence in JFK also. Piedmont picked up the routes when they purchased Empire. We used to fly to JFK from BWI, SYR, BDL, BOS, PVD, BUF, ROC, RIC, RDU, ROA, GSO, CLT, PIT, DAY, ORF and a couple others. The routes were primarily flown using the F28's and we had a sorta code share agreement with TWA. I remeber working the JFK flights and hating every minute of it because it never failed, 1400, everyday, JFK went into a ground delay program due to excessive demand.

The DH 8 went DCA / JFK and was only authorized to sell 19 seats. It was Hot Towels and Champagne service which fed into the Concorde. The other flight out of JFK after the official closing was a JFK/MCO which was paid for by ANA. The equip was a B737-200 and ANA guarenteed 65% of the seats. The only negative at JFK was when CLT and PIT would send a planeload of INTERNATIONAL misconnects to you. Its one thing to have a planeload of domestics misconnect but when you have a planeload of internationals, everyone stays to last last day of their Visa and try getting someone to a foreign destination in which the frequency of flights is once or twice a week .
