What Airlines Were Trying For The China Flights?

I have been reading a lot about Continental purchasing several aircraft and wondered if they were one of the airlines requesting approval for China flights?

I know that AA is seeking approval, but what other airlines are also seeking approval?

There were several applicants -- one will be selected for 2005 and one for 2006.

AA, from ORD
CO, from EWR
DL, from ATL
Hawaiian, from HNL
North American, from OAK

Since this is for frequencies, and not just the authority to operate to China, UA also applied for 7 frequencies. Considering they already have the most frequencies of any carrier, it's not likely that they'll get approval.

It will be between AA and CO for the 2005 frequencies. DL and HA are only interested in the 2006 award. North American is too small to take seriously...

DL has won and squandered far too many Asian rights over the years. Not sure if that will enter into the DOT's decision, but it should...
 
AA & CAL are revolutionary, DAL is evolutionary. ATL is too far south & east to be a worth while gateway. DAL had LAX/JFK to NRT they gave it up after 9/11, now AA has them. CAL has EWR to NRT so they fly NYC to Japan too. DAL doesn't even have any spare 777 for the flight. AA all the way.

If we get the route to China, can AA recall all the Chinese speaking f/a's from furlough? They're pretty junior though. More junior than former TWA people. I looked it up in our contract, but it didn't say anything about that. My friends said that AA can do whatever they want to even if skipping everyone else in front of those Chinese speaking f/a's and recall them for operational needs. I would say they would have to proffer across the board first and if they can't get enough then, they start drafting from the bottom up etc.

They can't recall from furlough out of seniority order. They can, however, fill vacancies in a base based on language if deemed necessary, but only from active FA's.

For what it's worth, the smart money is on January 21 for a decision out of the DOT on the China routes. Most people in the know at AA are very confident that AA will get it.

LOL, everytime they apply people at AA are very confident about being granted the routes.
I hope they get the route(s) though.
 
I hope AA gets the 2005 award as well, but I'd say it is an even 50/50 chance with CO, and an 80/20 chance for this year's runner up to get the 2006 award.

The award is effective April 1, so January 21 would barely allow 90 days notice.

TWA had a f/a base in Hong Kong for years. Why would you assume that there are no Chinese speakers among the former TWA flight attendants?

I thought some of the former TWAers indicated that the bases overseas were staffed by foreign nationals.
 
AA is exploring the possibility of heavy maintenance and shop overhaul work being done in China. We could lose money on the routes and still see tremendous cost savings in maintenance, albeit of rather low quality. The bright side is that line maintenance would have to be increased to keep the planes flying after Chinese heavy checks and overhaul.

The biggest concern is an overwater flight after a Chinese heavy check. Perhaps AA could use pilots furnished by the Chinese maintenance facility.
 
If AA can not solve the seniority issue to recall the Chinese
speakers or for instance there is not enough fluent-speaking
Chinese speakers currently active,why should customer choose
to fly AA if there are choices out there ?

The reason I point this out is because AA used to hire a whole
bunch of those American Born Chinese back in 2001 to fly the
TPE route.They spoke only little chinese and they refused to make
annoucements because they did not read and write chinese words.

If I am right,I believed there were more junior chinese speakers
hired in 2001 flying TPE route than the senior chinese speakers.
Therefore we could see that AA does not have enough Chinese speakers
currently active.

AA really need to find a way to solve this issue.

A much smaller issue than you make it out to be, IMO. But maybe you are right.

Many of the pax would be US citizens, who don't generally need Chinese language speakers on their flights. Many of the Chinese likely to be pax would probably speak rudimentary English (as it is widely spoken all over the world), and probably don't need Chinese speakers to get by.

Besides, the freight (very important on this route) doesn't speak either. B)

You are right,many of the passengers speak English.But imaging how many of
those Chinese people in New York dont speak English?There are tons of them.
Why would AA need speakers onboard?because the immigrants still prefer and
would like to speak their own language.Isnt it?

If AA has Japanese speakers onboard to fly to Japan,then why wouldnt AA need
Chinese speakers to fly to China?
