What to do about high cost of fuel?

The Maui operation has a 757 come in off load get towed off the gate ($500) and sits at remote burning fuel (1200-1400 lbs per day), gets towed back to the gate (another $500)......that is $1000 per day just in towing charges from UA - PLUS all that apu fuel getting burned EVERYDAY. This is just one city in Hawaii.

$365,000 per year in towing and almost another $250,000 per in in APU fuel burning for 1 757 in HI. This is just the turn - this does not include other contracts for water, lavs, ramp, catering or anything else going on there. Do you see anyway we can cut costs?

The $$$ spent covers A LOT of 'pretzels' folks.....

So rants the ratchet.....

Anybody want to wager that by January 2, 2009 the price of oil is under $100 per barrel and declining or at least flat?

I have a few bags of mini pretzels and a Biscoff or two to put at risk.

Why... Because Obama says so?

Dumbass..!!!!!

Airbus just announced that they would like to see 30% of jet fuel composed of some sort of bio-fuel by 2030. Now, where is Boeing? Oh yeah, in bed with oil.

Hardly, Boeing is looking into alternative fuels as well.

I say it will be flat, at $150 a barrel. I say that with optimism, because it will help the us realize that artificially supporting a "buggy whip" industry like petroleum is a losing proposition in the long run and will make alternative forms financially viable, sooner.

There is something wrong with our "incentives" when one can buy a Hummer and get up to $100,000 in tax breaks and yet, only $4000 maximum for a Prius. I am certain the same calculus applies to the airline industry. Airbus just announced that they would like to see 30% of jet fuel composed of some sort of bio-fuel by 2030. Now, where is Boeing? Oh yeah, in bed with oil.

Boeing in bed with the oil companies?

Boeing and Airbus, in partnership with major propulsion system manufactures began research and development on the use of alternative fuels within days of each other. Virgin Airways, flying a B747 with US made GE engines, made the first bio-fuel flight in February 2008. Boeing has invested billions of dollars into alternative fuels R & D.

Boeing will begin flying the most fuel efficient airliner ever designed within the next 2 years. Early on, Boeing recognized the ramifications of high fossil fuel cost and the detrimental affect it would have on the air transportation industry. As a “value addedâ€￾ benefit to the already super fuel efficient Dreamliner, Boeing has acknowledged that the aircraft will be adapted to accept alternative fuels. Airbus has only recently scrambled to design an airframe to compete with the Dreamliner

With this analogy in mind it is conceivable to think that it is Airbus that is in bed with the oil companies.

<_< The IAM people will find out when the OEI date is set. That is when we lose the no layoff verbage. The numbers in the POS TA ,gives you some idea on how low the company can take us. July is the target date for M&R. ( That would be Article 2 . B modified )
