From what I have read, it appears that they laid off everyone in SEA and replaced them with a contractor. I'm not really sure what is going on up there or where they are in the RLA process. But I read somewhere where the union is going to file a lawsuit over this matter. If they replaced everyone in SEA and both sides can excersize self-help, I wonder why the whole thing was not shut down. Alaska Air seems to be really sticking to their people.

1. The closing of their heavy maintanence hangar and laying off AMTs.
2. I understand their pilots took a big hit in their contract.
3. The present situation with the SEA rampers.

As far as I can tell, the contract gave them lattitude to outsource the ramp and bagroom at SEA, and that's what they did. Not sure what good a lawsuit is going to do if it was within their rights.

There's a lot more to this than you think. Over the past 30 years, ALPA and AS have agreed to a fixed timeframe for negotiations, after which they go into interest based arbitration on remaining issues. By the way, ALPA is the one who originally asked for that provision...

Last December, as the negotiation deadline approached, AS offered 12.5% paycut keeping the pension intact. ALPA said no. They wouldn't go further than 4%.

Before presentations to the arbitrator concluded, AS then offered them a 18% reduction. Pilots still refused, and opted to take their chances with the arbitrator.

To everyone's surprise, the arbitrator ordered deeper cuts than the Company was looking for, and gave them a 26% paycut. (Keep that in mind the next time you think a Judge is more likely to give you a fair deal...) Didn't hear what happened to their pension.

So, it's not entirely fair to say that the Company went hardball. The union took twice the paycut they would have if they'd have come to an agreement six months earlier.

If the company did indeed have an agreement in their contract with Ramp to do what they did then they can do what they did. If so, I blame the union for allowing such weak language.
If on the other hand their contract does not allow this to happen then they should shut down Alaska Airlines. I say this because if the comapny is doing something wrong they should be held accountable and labor should stand as one. If the company is wrong here and labor does nothing then the company will do it again, and again and again.

I read where these Ramp/Cabin people were given no warning. They came to work one night and the next they were gone. Sad. Very sad.

ModerAAtor,

I'm told by a source close to me, that AA and AS have been "cozy" for many years.

Any chance that since AS is "cleaning themselves up", that they might be about to get even "more cozy" with AA ????

Don't believe everything GB tells you... AS and AA have had various codeshare relationships over the years out of mutual convenience, but if there was going to be a merger, I think it would have happened already.
