Why hasn't US Airways made KDCA a hub?

Why haven't they made Ronald Reagan National Airport a hub? It has 16 nonstop destinations.

Calling an airport a "hub" is somewhat of a judgment call, as I don't believe there is a generally accepted definition of what constitutes a hub versus a focus city. The other US "hubs" -- PHL, CLT and PHX -- are much bigger in terms of daily departures and connecting opportunities. That's probably why DCA is classified a focus city. Again, some could call DCA a hub, just depends on your definition -- you can connect, has flights to more than just the other "hub" cities, has a crew base, etc.

Just a pet peeve here. Let's stick with IATA three letter codes, folks, not ICAO codes. True for US airports it's easy. But while I like to think of myself as being a bit of an aviation geek, I don't learn about how EHAM is AMS. Sure, at anet, posters like to show off their aviation geek credentials by using IACO designators. But this is not anet.

[If I really want to show off my aviation geek creds, I'd tell yinz why Kmoxville is TYS for Tyson Field ( I don't know if that this the frozen poultry Tyson), New Orleans, MSY. Ever notice there are no US IATA codes that start with K, N, or W?]

KDK PAKD Kodiak Municipal
KEH S60 Kenmore Air Harbor
NME PAGT Nightmute
NOT KDVO Gnoss Field CA
WAY KWAY Waynesburg PA
WBU KBDU Boulder Municipal CO

No, I didn't know them, I did have to look.

Although connections are theoretically possible at DCA (and at DL's new LGA "hub"), neither carrier will focus on connecting traffic at DCA (US) or LGA (DL). LGA and DCA will offer flights that are designed to capture the best yielding O&D traffic. Oh, sure, some low-fare connecting seats will be sold to fill seats not occupied by O&D traffic but neither airport has sufficient capacity to handle banks of connecting flights the way ATL or CLT or ORD or DFW can easily manage.

This really sounds like a discussion well-suited for www.airliners.net and its crowd of teenage airline moguls.

Here's one you'd think nobody would choose - FYU. Apparently, folks living in Fort Yukon, AK don't mind. However, the folks in Sioux City, IA, did try to get their airport's identifier changed a couple of times, but finally decided that SUX was better than the alternatives offered by the FAA and made the best of it with a "Flying SUX" campaign.

If you've ever been to the charming little armpit known as Sioux City, the airport code is totally on point even if my point isn't

IMO the most accurate airport code as a descriptor of the destination is FAR.

Fargo, ND is indeed far from everything except Happy Harry's Discount Liquors which is ranked consistently in the Top Ten Liquor stores in the nation. Not sure what that says about FAR but it says something.

KDCA is constrained to domestic operations. You cannot serve EGLL, EDDF or even MMUN... 🙂

KDCA is constrained to domestic operations.

Actually, not quite as long as the flights can be precleared. There have been flights to NAS, BDA, YYZ, YOW, YUL.

Another reason that DCA hasnt been turned into the true sense of a hub is the slot restraints that limit the amount of flights per hour. Kind of hard to have true banks with only so many arrivals/departures per hour.

NAS YYZ and so on are considered domestic OPS because of the preclearance....

The bottom line is that with Dulles right around the corner DCA is gonna remain a domestic airport for the forseeable future.... got dammit how do you spell forseeable?

Well, then. Explain to me why PHL/CLT-CUN is dispatched as a domestic operation, and PHL/CLT-SJU is dispatched as an international operation?
