Why Kites...

all i know is that those #$%^$%$ kites fly at over a 1000'' in SE Asia constantly. the locals use steel wire because the things are so huge!!!!! you fly there in fear everytime center would instruct you to descend!!!

Hey Winnie. If Your really bored try driving down the road really fast and sticking your hand out the window. You can vary the angle of attack or is that the angle of incidence and with varing the speed you can see what happens.Just like your kite or airplane wings. If your s300 is fast enough you could try sticking your hand out the window of that as well

Rotor Pilot:
But there is only one thing, the kite is not nose down, it is nose up, thus shouln''t the lift vector point up and back, not up and forward? Anyways, seems like people woke up, to answer, even though the others were about RDM''s new car.
But the string is only a minor part isn''t it, and I also noted that if you pull ont hte string, that also make it accelerate, suppose that has to do with lift/weigh/load factor as well.
Guess I was trying to think too hard about it!
Well, one thing is for sure, my kite won''t even make it to 200 feet above the aerodrome, but it sure is fun!!

407D:
They won''t even let me look at the MEK bottle, let alone sniff it!

Thumper2:
I though everybody down in YYT drove minivans, not cars, atleast that is what it seemed like when I visited in my Giant Scweizer a few weeks ago

RDM, I guess we have a test coming up in wekk and a half, as the maintenance will only take 3-4 days, and goes in on monday morning. Will give you a call today or tomorrow.

I can't make a drawing in a post but lets try with my poor English

It works as a wing. The result forces are: One exactly opposed to the direction of the string and another is along the longitudinal axis of the Kite. The lift is the combined result force.

No Winnie. The string is the most important part of it.
To ease up things a bit, try to see the string as the engine of the airplane. If you let go the string while flying (power zero) the Kite falls immediately to the ground because the reaction forces both disappear. There is NO airflow in the Kite. Without “powerâ€￾ both lift and drag go, something you know from the books.

When you pull on the string, what you really do is creating an increase in the speed of the airflow in the Kite, thus you also increase lift and the kite goes up. It’s the same as increasing power in the engine of an airplane.

In an aeroplane the airflow is created by the displacement of the aircraft and everything else you already know.
In a Kite there is NO displacement (except when you are manoeuvering) and all the forces are a result of the wind. The string, forcing the Kite to be in the same place allows the wind to provoke the lift and drag exactly in the same way as a miniature aircraft inside a Wind Tunnel…

Here are some of those the 412 doesn't like to see at 1,000 feet

My kite is a beautiful BV 107, with rotating main rotor discs and 2 buckets!!!

Watch for it on fires this summer, the envy of everyone on every fire base!

RDM is driving a new car you say ....oh my gad, here we go again...A1 Towing, 772-3425....Nfld. Constabulary, 772-8976......ambulance 772-4445. It''s no bloody wonder Insurance rates are so high in Atlantic Canada!!

Has everyone forgotten about the center of pressure? RP is right that the lift increases, but it must be designed so that, with the increase in lift, the CofP moves forward, imparting a forward vector to the line of lift, thus accelerating the kite forward, nu?

When the wind speed increases, the kite produces more lift like a wing. It can''t go further away from you, it is held by a string, so it accelerates up along the arc of the string until the force vectors all balance again. Going up on the strings arc decreases the angle of attack, but the higher wind speed leaves the total lift about the same. The kite is just trying to keep its force vectors even. (lift, drag, g, thrust)
