Aircraft maint issues

Yea, they're building a hangar down there. They will be employing I've heard close to 400 mechanics to do our work, what was formerly known as B check cards. The union stands by and does nothing, instead focusing on bulletin boards and uniforms.

And the unions wonder why the Boeing plant in south Carolina voted no to union representation.....
An AFL-CIO that does nothing to prevent outsourcing......
And non union Delta who makes more than we do....

Can't say what the schools are teaching these days. I'm betting dope and fabric and fiberglass repair is still being taught but hopefully some composite/hot bonding too.
I can say that on a 787 with extensive fuselage damage around passenger windows from a lightning strike last year, Boeing sent a team to DWH for repairs that took a couple of weeks. Also last year Boeing sent an instructor to DWH a couple of times to teach composite repair classes to mechanics. Even guys with past composite repair experience had trouble with it. The 787 is a different animal for sure but supposedly the goal is to be able to do most if not all repairs in-house.

That does not sound very reassuring.

Do you think aircraft are getting to the point where you will have to have.... well the best way I can describe it is general practitioners (A&P's) and specialist (avionics, composite skin repair, etc)?

If experienced people are having issues with the new application of the composite then maybe we are entering a new era requiring specialization.

Composites are generally easy to work. Any sheet metal guru would pick up composites easily. It does take patience and an eye for detail. If any of you have a chance to do thru a composite course I would highly recommend it. After getting the basic composite course I would then recommend the advanced composite courses that Boeing puts on is better.

No, as swamt said, it's still basic composite work. But from what I was told the prep sanding and laying up is just more involved. It's not rocket surgery or anything. And like structues work, some guys are going to be good and some are going to be hacks.

Fair enough. I will be the first to admit I know nothing of metal working or composites. The article makes it sound very complicated to the layman.

Yea that should bring the company to its knees.. I wonder if Lombardo and Pantoja will be wearing their t-shirts during negotiations.
