Obama is such a moron for letting this go forward. The Navy did not want it. It already appears it has so many short comings (Another B1?). Cancel it and put the money where it is needed. Too many politicians have their hands in the till for that to every happen.
The General Accounting Office expressed concerns that the Navy was trying to incorporate too much new technology. Some Navy officials pointed out that it's less capable than existing destroyers when it comes to missile defense, and a defense analyst warned that it would be vulnerable while operating close to shore for fire support.

Even its "tumblehome" hull was criticized as potentially unstable in certain situations.

The 600-foot-long ships are so big that the General Dynamics-owned shipyard spent $40 million to construct a 106-foot-tall building to assemble the giant hull segments.

And then there's the cost, roughly $3.8 billion apiece, according to the Navy's latest proposed budget.

Including research and development, the cost grows to $7 billion apiece, said Winslow Wheeler, director of the Straus Military Reform Project at the Center for Defense Information in Washington.

The cost ballooned, in part, because the Navy will only buy three of them:

Because of cost, the originally envisioned 32 ships dipped to 24 and then seven. Eventually, program was truncated to just three. The first, the Zumwalt, will be christened next year and delivered to the Navy in 2014.

I'm pretty sure that they wouldn't cost $7 billion each if the Navy bought 32 of them.

The first iPhone probably represented a billion dollars or more of R&D. Had Apple sold only three of them, each would have "cost" over $333 million each. But sell a few hundred million iPhones and the R&D investment can be amortized so it represents a few dollars each.

Most of that "$7 billion" cost represents sunk costs, not the actual production cost of each ship.

The OP freaks out over the cost of this item but supports throwing more and more cash towards failed green ventures. Where I hail from , wasted money is wasted money and all should draw our ire not just some.

Granted but the Navy did not want them. They did not want 3 much less 24 or 32 of them. It seems the Ship had some issues to begin with, it is overly advanced and a single torpedo can turn it into the Titanic s bunk buddy. This ship seems to have been created to fight enemies that do not exist anymore. I have read countless articles from various military folks that have said they would rather have 20 average pieces of hardware than one bad ass one. Seems the US always has to go super high tech when main stream technology will do the job. We have no space shuttle and are currently relying on the Russians to get us to and from the ISS. Look at how much space time the Russians have when compared to the US. We keep trying to reinvent the wheel.

In the councils of government, we must guard against the acquisition of unwarranted influence, whether sought or unsought, by the military-industrial complex. The potential for the disastrous rise of misplaced power exists and will persist.

Never said he was completely crazy, just mostly crazy. The idea of military industry being too powerful is not a uniquely libertarian idea. A simple look at some of the systems procured by the military should be adequate for most to see the idiocy in it. Sgt York gun, B1, Seawolf class sub to mention a few. Military and the builders never met a toy they did not like. Sell it with some patriotism and a few American flags and the chicken hawks are all over it.
