Analysts See US Airways Bucking Industry Trend, Reporting 4Q Profit

NEW YORK (AP) -- US Airways Group Inc. reports results for the fourth quarter on Tuesday. The following is a summary of key developments and analyst opinion related to the period.
OVERVIEW: US Airways is pushing to buy rival Delta Air Lines Inc. in a hostile takeover bid, which analysts say could set off a wave of mergers and acquisitions.

Investors hope consolidation might help reduce the number of available seats and give airlines more pricing power. Prospects for industry consolidation, though, have dimmed, as Delta has vigorously fought US Airways' offer.

Several of US Airways' competitors so far have reported disappointing fourth-quarter results, blaming winter storm cancellations and weakening unit-revenue growth. But US Airways is one of the few carriers that analysts expect to still turn a quarterly profit.

US Airways is working to become a hybrid of the two models in the airline industry: a low-cost carrier crossed with a network, hub-and-spoke airline. The airline enjoys relatively low operating costs, after it slashed employee payrolls and other expenses during prior Chapter 11 bankruptcy reorganizations. But it also offers first-class cabins and an international route network, which helps it attract high-revenue corporate travelers.

BY THE NUMBERS: Analysts are expecting quarterly profit of 80 cents per share on $2.84 billion in revenue, according to a poll by Thomson Financial.

ANALYST TAKE: Calyon Securities analyst Ray Neidl wrote in a recent report that US Airways likely won't be discouraged even if its Delta buyout bid fails.

If that happens, he said, "the aggressive management team there will formulate another bid in the next twelve months for Delta or another airline, setting off merger talks all over again."

STOCK PERFORMANE: Ebullience over possible industry consolidation helped US Airways shares rise 21.5 percent through the quarter, ending the year at $53.85 on the New York Stock Exchange. Shares closed Friday at $52.13.

We all know that US Airways and United Airlines are Carrie and Mr. Big and are supposed to be together. Let's get it going. Delta Shmelta.
