20 More 757's...

Well, I prefer growth aircraft over replacement aircraft anyday, but...

If 757's are replacing 737's and even A320s then it is still a plus in my book, esp. if they are the stretch 757-300's...

Either way, such a move could greatly increase our transcon traffic.

It will be interesting to see how this turns out.

US East has the oldest EAL 757s that came off the line.

There's still 10 of them active and they need to be retired! It seems everytime you turn around there's some sort of maint issue going on with those old EA birds...Get rid of 'em!

Considering the landing fees at MIA, you are lucky you see 400's and not all 300's!

I think that Port Everglades is busier these days than Miami, which is why FLL see's everything but the widebodies.

You may want to check your numbers. Although Port Everglades has a descent amount of cruise traffic, the Port of Miami is alot busier than Port Everglades. Sundays at Miami Int Airport are jammed with Cruise Pax. Non Revenue travel on Sundays and into Monday mornings is almost impossible. FLL has also seen a decrease in pax traffic recently while MIA holds strong.

Don't hold your breath on the 757-300's. Boeing made a very limited number of them and Northwest and Continental have most of them.

Add to that the fact that its a pig just like the A321.

Well, that jives with the recall.
I myself do not care for the 757, so, hard to get happy about it.
Good for the furloughees!
I'd MUCH rather see 767's coming online. Better for transatlantic and eventually Hawaii!

THE 757 is a wonderfull airplane wether its a
older eastern plane or not, it is a machine and can always be fixed.I know all the 757s inside and out and they are a workhorse second to none, especially with the rb211 engine even with the GE it is still a great machine. It is over built with incredibley strong long lasting airframe.Ask any pilot
they like them. The airbus is a great aircraft also and i look foward too seeing a lot more of them. The 737 is harder to work on and it seems like to me the one to retire.
Id like to see us move to 4 aircraft configuration...757/321/320/ and the 330.It would require less parts and would be a smart buisness move to only have a limited number of fleet type.
I would also like to see the company move all airbus heavy maintence to charlotte.Where we have the hangar to do it in and the techs.

your thoughts:

Not many machines can T/O from a 5600ft strip--- packs off-flaps 20--182 folks----fly 2200nm to KPIT with an alternate---super machine !!

Yeah, yeah, y'all, I understand how wonderful they are to load and fly.
I'm just coming from the FA view, especially the ones West has, they suck to work. FC is OK, main cabin I will not touch.
Boarding is always a cluster, never enuf room in the overheads. West's are unreliable (good thing the mechs love working on them so much!), and they smell bad.
I would rather work a 737.

Luckily, there are those who feel the opposite, and like to bid them.
Good. Leaves more airbus lines for the rest of us!
More aircraft of any kind is a good thing.
More recalls, more lineholders, THAT I can get happy about 😀

Love the 757's! It is one awesome aircraft. Can't wait to bid PHL to get back on them. You can keep that airbus. Thats the beauty of this job, something for everyone!

I agree with others what a great plane the 757 is and I am thrilled Tempe wants to keep them around and even grow the fleet. Two personal experiances to share. One Summer in the mid 1990'S we flew the 757 LGA-BDA. Because of the fuel cost in BDA we fueled in LGA for the r/t, there was usally no fuel uplift at BDA. The cabin was often full and typically about 10,000 pounds of bags, mail, and freight. I don't ever remember a weight problem even with summer temps and LGA's short runways. Another summer I non-reved on a 757 PHL-SEA, temps in the 90's, Transcon fuel load, full cabin including jumpseats, over 10,000 lbs of cargo and from my window seat you could see the runway foot markers, we where airbourne in less than 5000 feet, what an awesome flying machine !

Cheers

Very correct statement. I am actually a tech with UPS after 15 years with USAirways where my wife is currently a Flight Attendent. Day in and out our 757's are our best dispatched acft (although our competition is low 747-200, DC-8, 727, and MD11 all high maint birds). We have Rolls as well as PW engines. Just remember the Rolls have more power, however the Pratts will get you there with less fuel burn. The poster who said they do not like this acft is nuts, the best acft around, bar none!!

the 57s have two prblems in my view...a cramped cabin and a tiny FC. Both can be easily fixed.

Comming from the f/a's position on the east, the worst thing they did besides remove f/c seats was getting rid of the valet closet at the 2R door. It is absolutely horrible to board at the 2L door on a full flight. There is no overhead space at all. Then heaven help you if you have one of the few a/c with the HI-8 video above row 6 and 7. Where are people to put their steamer trunks? LOL As a passenger or f/a sitting in the back, you can just FEEEEEL the power on that sucker on take off. Flying B sitting at the 4L door is like riding on the back of a rocket sometimes. I love it.

From a former west FA perspective, I agree with Desertgal. The 757's were hard to work, except for FC. The cult following they among senior FA's in the west was, in large part, duee to the fact they were always breaking and cancelling, allowing those FA's to get paid for going home.

Much of that maintenance problem has been rectified by Parker, et al., with the problem having arisen during the Franke years where the plane was poorly scheduled and utilized on routes and maintenance was not being done in a pro-active mode. Rumor had it Boeing actually wanted to get those planes away from AWA because it was hurting the entire operations of reliablity factor of the entire Boeing 757 line of aircraft and doing that with only 14 aircraft. Had it not been for being able to get paid for doing little work, I wonder how many senior AWA FA's would have bid that aircraft back in those days.
