Yet they can intervene in the Shaivo case?! I love the priorities of our federal gov't.

Latest poll says only 13% blame Bush for the releif fiasco. The rest of the blame goes to Gov Blanco and what's his name mayor of MSY.
I think the major should have had every school and city bus availible to evacuate the citizens. The Gov should have opened every school gym 100 miles or more from MSY for refugees. Save the people first then get supplies from local stores. Then sort out the details after the people were safe.

...First NewsMax reported this on Wednesday in an article titled "New Poll: Americans Not Blaming Bush for Katrina Problems"

Only 13 percent of those polled believe President Bush is "most responsibleâ€￾ for the problems in New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina, a new poll discloses.
And 35 percent said Bush has done a "greatâ€￾ or "goodâ€￾ job responding to the hurricane and flooding, according to the CNN/USA Today/Gallup poll.

Ok, sounds truthful enough until you read the actual CNN article that reveals the poll numbers. I will quote only the pertinent paragraph here.

Opinions varied widely, however, on the response of federal, state and local officials regarding Katrina. Forty-two percent of respondents characterized President Bush's response to the disaster as "bad" or "terrible," while 35 percent said it was "good" or "great."

There we see the real numbers....

While the local/state authorities are not blameless, all of FEMA's ineptness must be laid squarely at the feet of the President. He insisted on political appointees for FEMA instead of qualified people, which eventually drove out all the talented senior FEMA employees who actually knew something about disaster assistance. But that isn't surprising, everything about the Bush administration is political instead of doing what is best for the American people.

Bush to Survey Ruined Streets of New Orleans
By Kieran Murray, Reuters

NEW ORLEANS (Sept. 12) - President George W. Bush, stung by criticism over the government's slow response to Hurricane Katrina, on Monday takes his most extensive tour of waterlogged New Orleans, ruined by the storm two weeks ago.

During his third visit to the Gulf Coast since the storm hit, the president will survey the damage to the city by air and in military vehicles on the ground before making two stops in Gulfport, Mississippi, which was also pummeled when Katrina hit on Aug. 29.

In recent days, Bush has dispatched Vice President Dick Cheney and Cabinet officials to survey the damage and to counter continued criticism that the administration's response to the storm has been slow and inadequate.

Polls show Americans were deeply unhappy with federal, state and local officials, who they said moved too slowly to help.

Bush personally took a big hit. A Newsweek survey found just 38 percent of those polled approved of Bush's performance, the lowest rating of his presidency.

On Sunday, the president visited a base camp for hundreds of firefighters from around the country, including New Yorkers marking the fourth anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks. They had come to help with rescue and recovery efforts in this latest disaster.

"Television doesn't do it justice, I mean the magnitude of the challenge is almost indescribable," said White House chief of staff Andrew Card, who accompanied Bush.

Bush spent the night aboard the warship USS Iwo Jima, docked near New Orleans' once-lively downtown. Largely evacuated of its residents, the struggling city is now occupied by soldiers, police and emergency personnel.

The governor and the mayor are proud members of the political party that supported slavery and Jim Crow, obstructed the passage of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, elevated a former Klansman to fourth in line to the presidency and another to the US Supreme Court. Many people would find it distasteful to be a part of such an organization.

Squire Kelly;

Well funny you should mention that. The fact is that most of the Dixiecrats of years ago became Republicans, why? Because as Lyndon Johnson predicted those Democrats would resist the reforms initially set in place by Northern Democrats. The Republican Party of today closer represents their ideals than the Democrats.

Should todays Democrats feel tainted because of the Dixiecrats? Not any more than any other American should feel tainted as Americans because our slavery past or the American flag waving, cross burning, Klansmen of today who claim to be the protectors of the American way(who by the way are more likely to be Republicans than Democrats).

When the history books are closed on GWB, it won't matter what the polls were on a given day or month.

He's had a lot happen on his watch, much of it being outside influences or natural/engineering disasters.

Off the top of my head, you've got 9/11, SARS, Space Shuttle, Katrina, Iraq, and Afghanistan. For better or worse, you can also credit/blame him with pushing Israel into withdrawing from Gaza and what's amounting to the formation of a Palestine state.

And there's still three years left.....

All in all, I think he'll wind up looking OK after the dust settles.

I certainly can't see Gore having put up with the strain of all those events, and Kerry never would have entered the scene had Gore won in 2000....

Then there are those of us who feel that after the dust has settled, and history has had a chance to reflect on the Bush reign, he will go down looking like one of the worst presidents ever.
