What's new

A330 and B767

I was surprised that when CO still had 737-200's the 737 pilots all flew the 200/300/500/700/800/900. A friend who is an a 737 FO for them said he had trips where he would actually fly a 200 leg then the next would be a 900. Pretty big difference in technology.

My 2 cents

LGA777

We didn't have any 900's when the last 100/200's were retired. Thee first 800's and 700's came on-line in 98/99.

The 737-900 is no 757.

Very true, but you have to look at when Boeing made that decision and their other products that were (or would be) available. The 757 was conceived as a 727 replacement while the 767 was the long-haul half of the pair. When the 737NG's were stretched, filling the capacity role of the 757-200, there wasn't really a lot of need for the 757 - the NG's filled the under 200 seat 2500nm and less role and the 767's filled the 200+ seat 2500 nm+ role (along with the 777/747) - there were few/no TA flights operated by the 757 when the decision was made. While I certainly don't know, I suspect that AA's MIA - S America flights using the 757 were among the longest routes it was used on at the time Boeing decided to discontinue the 757.

By 1999, 757 orders were drying up with only 87 757's of all versions ordered after that (half of which were placed in 2000). Deliveries continued till late 2004 (426 delivered after 1999), but 80% were filling orders placed prior to 1999. As Boeing said in the press release annoncing delivery of the final 757, "The capabilities of its Next-Generation 737 family and launch of its all-new 7E7 Dreamliner led Boeing to conclude the 757 program."
