AA and APFA expidite talks

I have to ask. What short term relief did AA offer the mechanics?
More concessions to be exact, in exchange for approx $5000 lump sum before tax payed over 2 years. The concessions would allow Eagle to expand by 33%, the twu taking over the medical plan, crew chiefs selected by a management panel, 30% non-licensed mechanics on the line, and more. We like to refer to it as a short-term kick in the teeth, with long-term consequences. <_<

I didn't think I had gone crazy. This is the way I remember it too.

I have a bad feeling that this "Concession Extension" is going to be presented to the membership to vote on. Especially since the APFA has now sold out to the company. If this thing gets past the negoiation commitee, Tulsa and MCI are going to fall over themselves to vote YES on it. Even if the negoiation commitee blocks it again, Little Jimmy is going to ratify it for us. We are DOOMED!

APFA’s purpose is to spend the next three weeks focused exclusively on reaching an agreement that provides immediate relief to the Flight Attendants. While success may be unlikely...

You think? What are you expecting, pay restoration? Relaxation of work rules?

I dont think we will see that happen. Worst case though, we can stop it with a vote.
Hope so!

HAS NOW? Where have you been? That's been going on since April 2003 when they accepted our RPA for us. I have no faith that anything we vote in the future will hold weight either.

Of course, the usual cheerleaders will try to tell me otherwise.

I'm still waiting for the company to reveal the numbers. Seems a little funny that other airlines are already in the process of offering leaves and telling them their numbers and we have to just wait in line for the guillotine.

So what else would you propose they do, Princess?

Indeed, but since you get to ratify, and that must be at least 50% plus one, then less than 50% are doomed!!! How great is that!!!!!!!!!!!!

If the company doesn't offer a pay raise that matches SWA and UPS, Then it's STRIKE time! That is the only right thing to do. Of course, some people will use the excuse of the ILLEGAL railway act to hide their cowardice.

Do you SERIOUSLY THINK that AA can afford pay raises that match SWA and UPS? I mean do you really think that? Have you even been looking at the financial reports? And you want to strike? I can assure you that all the other carriers would love that. If this airline were shut down by a strike it would be the end. That would be the capacity reduction that the industry needs. I honestly believe that the airline's assets would be sold off. These carriers cannot continue to lose money month after month. Something has to give and it has to happen pretty quickly. I hope AA isn't a casualty of the industry, I really don't. But someone is going to lose. Maybe more than one carrier. The carriers that have already shut down weren't large enough to make a dent in the capacity problem.

Do I see raises and better workrules ever occuring again? Yes, but in the future and only when the industry stabilizes. Right now airlines are having to "re-learn" the business. Oil prices are never going back down to 100.00 a barrel. So the obvious answer is that the product will have to be priced higher to cover the costs. Right now there are just too many seats for sell to allow the companies to get a higher premium. But once the companies downsize enough, or at least one major carrier's capacity is pulled completely, the airline's will finally have the pricing power that they need to be able to cover costs and even squeek out a profit.

Sure it sucks right now, but look on the bright side. It will either get better or it will be over.

If they can afford to pay executives multimillions, they can at least match what UPS and SWA are paying their mechanics. Financial reports have to be taken with a grain of salt. This industry cooks the books all the time. The APFA struck in 1993-4 during an airline economic "crisis" so what's so differrent now? When are the unions in this industry going to stand up and say no more?! AMFA did and every scab union(ALPA,AFA,IAM,TWU) in this industry stabbed them in the back and collaborated with management.

Please tell me Skymess what's your limit on concessions? At what point will you pull your head out of the sand and do something?

I set my limits in 2003, Princess, and voted no. The union chose not to listen to that vote then and I doubt they would listen to it now.

I am not under any delusions about the financial state of the company. I am disgusted, however, that so many of my coworkers are busy minding the company's coffers for them regarding what money should be allocated to us. We should all be making sure that we don't give anything else up while under the misguided idea that it will help us in the future. You NEVER get back what you give away unless you agree to it in writing.
