Afa Meeting

It will be late into the night on WED before we know anything....but Thursday morning should tell all. Pat Friend spoke out against the agenda item that AW put forward....so great news for US F/A's. DOH will prevail. 😉

Nothing has happened with that vote yet. They have been in different meetings on different days. But you're right, the vote comes up either wednesday or thursday. I"m sure there will be a post on this soon.

How do you figure DOH will prevail based solely on the fact that Frau Friend spoke out against it. Doesnt the membership have a say?

Pat Friend speaking out against it does hold it's weight. And while I am not a fan of hers, I applaud her for at least taking some stand. Yes, the membership will have a say via their Local President AKA BOD members. DOH will prevail because the agenda item is silly and baseless. The vote can't come soon enough for me!

Will the vote be just US and HP, or is this something that would need to be voted on on a national level?

If I am correct, all of the MEC's vote on it, but I am not sure if it is a rollcall vote or not. If it is a rollcall vote, then United and US East(which would have overwhelming votes) would vote no, which should outway all other MEC's. It would be a sad situation if they voted yes, especially halfway thru a merger. As I have always stated, If US West had tried to get this changed before any talks of a merger( with a senoir airline), I would have alittle more respect for them. I guess if US West were merging with a junior carrier, the DVD would never had been put out. Or maybe they would be saying, " Hey, let's give these people seniority they don't deserve." What in the world makes you think that you should be allowed to change things halfway thru the game?

My personal opinion is that if the AFA bylaws state date of hire, then it should indeed be date of hire. The issue should have been addressed prior to or in the early stages of merger talks, not after the deal was done. I hope this doesnt create a great deal of annimosity between east and west. I also dont agree with a fence. If I'm not mistaken, the way it currently works is that a sr. f/a can not displace a jr. f/a from his/her base. the only way to transfer from base to base is if there is an opening. I think the west f/a's are afraid that the east f/a's are going to bump them out of PHX and LAS. That is not the case. Most sr. f/a's plan on staying where they are. Not many want to uproot their families...heck, they didnt want to do it when PIT closed, to move to CLT or PHL...I cant see a mad rush on for PHX

So if there was a reduction in flying in PHL you're saying that people would quit rather than move to PHX and be at the top of the list?

I still say that by sticking to a blinders-on approach to integration, you run the risk of winning the battle and losing the war. There are alot of mid-seniority people who still have alot of years left to work here. Those years can be pleasant or not, but the choice is in the U attendants hands.

Dear Dan,

AFA BOD Update - Agenda Item #3

News from the BOD

Yesterday October 18, 2005, the reports of the International officers were given. The International President, Pat Friend, stated in her report to the BOD on the proposed agenda item #3 "Seniority Merger Policy, "I urge this 2005 Board of Directors to think carefully before overturning the decision of their predecessors in order to accommodate an individual circumstance."

The International Vice President, George Donahue said, "Seniority is the bedrock of our profession." and "...has been applied repeatedly over the last 19 years, with minimal damage to the AFA flight attendant population." and "There is only a relative degree of fairness depending upon the courage of the leadership to fully educate its members. I urge this board to vote AGAINST Agenda #3 and its proposed change."

Needless to say there was a marked change in the AMW contingent upon hearing the International Officers come out AGAINST a change to the C&B merger policy. But as all of us have realized, there really is only one FAIR way to merge seniority lists and AFA International BOD adopted that change 19 years ago when they came to terms on HOW to merge seniority lists.

As this E-Line information is being sent out, the Agenda Committee is meeting and watching a thorough presentation of our position being given by the MEC President. More information will be forthcoming as the Agenda Item comes to the floor.

Thank You,

MEC Communications Chair

Wow, those are two very strong endoresments coming from the top. Hopefully this thinly-veiled attempt to circumvent long-standing policy (and fairness!) will go up in smoke and the merger committees can get on with the business they were formed to do.

Are the United F/As on average a younger group with fewer years of service than US?

If they are why would they vote to keep DOH?

I can't wait till this is done and over with. That way we can all get on with creating a great new US.
