Aircraft Order to be announced

I did read somewhere on the net that they are full until 2013 and may consider adding facilities to increase production. I'll see if I can find the article.

I'm thinking the 787's will not be the only announcement. How about some 737's?

Something will have to be done to replace the gaping hole left when the 757s go away. Nothing can replace that type of performance, but the 737-900ER comes very close:

Note the 9% lower operating costs per trip as compared to the A321. And I'd bet that savings figure doesn't include the savings realized from fewer spare parts.

25 April 2007

Montreal, Canada: Air Canada, owned by Montreal-based ACE Aviation Holdings Inc., has said that it was increasing its Boeing 787 Dreamliner orders to 37 from 14. This makes it the largest North American customer for the plane.

The new aircraft, which are scheduled for delivery beginning 2010, will replace the carrier's Airbus A340s and A330s and Boeing 767s.

In a recent Crew News session in PHX Doug Parker said the B787 would be available for delivery in 2011 and the A350 in 2013.

He indicated one of the benefits of the B787 is that it would permit US Airways to not have a single source supplier, which would continue to help having two manufacturers bid against one another.

He did not mention how this would effect the upcoming narrowbody order.

Raise your hand if you remember fleet commonality being the reason for the AB order under Wolfe

Nice news indeed as US needs some new planes.

Are these planes that US will own outright?

I wonder how much of a decision it really was given that AB and Europe are in a perpetual state of prevarication. Lots of carriers are lining up to replace aging fleets and only Boeing has new product in production while AB keeps promising product. I guess US had to make a choice. Sounds like a good one to me.

In any case, nice to hear some good news.

An article a month or two ago, when talking about the order. It was discussing which way Airways would go. Part of what was mentioned, was the Boeing had told US they needed an answer by the end of Mar/Apr I believe to hold some early spots they could fit us in. Another article stated that it looked like Boeing would loose the order, as they were insisting that if we ordered the 787 with the early slots, we had to order the narrrow bodies from them too. I guess we'll wait till the earnings call or the shareholders meeting to hear the details..

I bet they'll stay with Airbus for narrowbodies, Boeing for widebodies.

Good news if its true

Parker probably realizes that having the 787 will make US a more favorable partner when/if mergers occur.

According to Doug Parker, both manufactuers were very aggressive and kept cutting thier widebody prices, which caused US Airways to keep negotiating and dragged out the process.

I suspect the same thing will happen with the narrowbody order, which makes it difficult for even the "executive suite" to predict the winning supplier.

The two orders and sales conversations have been a fluid situation, but it would not surprise me if US Airways selected the B787 over the A350 and the A321 over the B737.

Thats what I'm thinking. Its all about the next merger as usual. NW has ordered the 787, has UA?
