Airline Goal: Damage Control

Every single f/a is eligible for the "furlough package". They just may not hit the number for the unemployment if the applicants exceed the staffing levels needed for U.

Every one who applies will get the rest of the package and if it is "over subscribed" the leaves will be staggered.

I don't want to sign up w/ the Charlotte Post so I haven't read the article, but I imagine it says that US has taken steps to insure they don't have a repeat of last week. As a US FF I can only hope that is the case. I've never liked flying through Philly because it seems like they shut runways if a butterfly farts. If the weather is bad at all it really doesn't matter how many people US has on the ground in PHI, things will still go badly. And unfortunately, leisure flyers are going to assume it's due to the inneptness of US Air.

So, I guess the future of US is in natures hands!

Hoping USAir makes it,

Here's the appropriate quote from the article:

"But the company says it doesn't have the ability to absorb such a hit anymore. In Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection for the second time in two years, US Airways has trimmed its employee total to 26,659 from 28,381 in November 2003."

As the thread title implies, why fix the problems when you can do "damage control".

Jim

"We failed our customers over Christmas, we recognize that," company spokesman David Castelveter said. "We don't want it to happen again. We will be there in the event there is another shortage."

This should have been the first statement to come from CCY several days ago. Period. None of this blame crap and back and forth in the press. That is good for nobody (except me, as it gives an outsider insight into the company).

They should send some of those 400 volunteers to BUF. i went through there last night. There was a cop being paid overtime to guard the hundereds of bags still sitting in the claim area.

Gotta love the people that one one hand whine that the company has done nothing to control costs, and only looks to concessions to save itself...

While on the other hand they "expect" staffing levels to remain at the traditionally high levels, adding further overhead, only to compensate for people that are supposed to be grown ups and do their job (when they are scheduled to do thier job).

Great.

Having your Cake and Eating it too is a tough thing to pull off anytime, but when you are in BK, surviving on cash alone, and looking to make better use of fewer people would normally be considered a smart move...

But hey, they gotta cover extra so the traditional 200+ slackers can still call off like they always do, and still not effect things. Otherwise it is not the fault of those who called off, it is the "fault" of the barely surviving company...

What a stupid notion that is.

Grow up.

Keep it going there Rico, and you will have your picture hanging on the wall in
CCY next to USA320's someday.......

I suppose one could question why, since U has been in big trouble for years, didn't management execute it's responsibilities to get rid of the chronic "slackers" IAW the labor contract they signed long ago? The union isn't management's "Enforcer". It's MANAGEMENT'S responsibility to enforce discipline and standards. Why haven't they done that? Current chronic understaffing, chronic problems with electronic checkin machines, and lack of ground handling equipment is also MANAGEMENT'S responsiblity.

This management team insists on chumming the waters from a life preserver. The SW, JB and AirTran sharks are getting very very close.

I agree Rico. All this has shown is how over-staffed we were with F/A's in past years. I find it absolutely hilarious that Teddy Xidas and Pat Friend have gone on local and national news to say the normal sick calls during the holidays is in the 300 range. Both women have admitted that normal sick calls during the rest of the year do not come close to this number.

How can they expect support for their position when they overtly admit there is a spike in sick calls? Any rational person would look at their statements and say, "Should US Airways staff an additional 200 bodies to protect two weeks of the year? I think not."
