United announced its July traffic results this afternoon, which included an all-time record system load factor of 82.9% for the month as the carrier''s RPM decline (-5.7%) was much smaller than its ASM decrease (-12.2%). Almost three-quarters of the system RPM decline was attributable to United''s Pacific operations, which are slowly recovering from the effects of the SARS epidemic.
Of course, we will need to wait until the end of the month to see if United''s July financial results (the more critical P&L and cash flow numbers) reflect a similar positive trend. Still, while the above traffic results are just a small step along United''s road to recovery, at least it''s a step in the right direction.
