American Airlines to hold back summer expansion

American Airlines, the largest US carrier by revenue, has decided to restrict the traditional expansion of domestic routes during the busy summer months as part of wide-ranging effort to break even for the first time in six years.

"Our levels of flying don't peak up as much this summer," said Henry Joyner, American's senior vice-president for planning.

Finally, some capacity discipline.

With NW and DL shrinking their domestic operations substantially, perhaps there's hope yet. Especially now that ADD-Dave the wunderkid has finally faltered. May B6 lose bushel-baskets full of money with oil creeping higher and higher. B)

If the Congress, State, and City government would withhold the Corporate Welfare, and the Federal Bankrupcty laws did not advocate socialized air transportation.

The United States Capitalist Society would have naturally solved the capacity issue.

Instead, we all got screwed and could give a #### less about the industry.

Corporate welfare combined with workers concessions are the products of a Fascist state.

As the Conservative block keeps appointing fascist leaning Justices to the Supreme court we can expect more of the above. Whats really suprising is how Evangelical Protestantism -normally stalwarts of Democracy, true Conservatism and highly suspicious of Papistry, has allied itself with Opus Dei, a Fascist sect of the Catholic Church. I read somewhere that the majority of the Supreme Court is now Catholic, some reportedly are converts. The literal translation for Opus Dei is "Work of God". Whereas the Nazis linked work with Nationalism Opus Dei links it with Religion. Both ideologies press upon believers to work for the sake of work, while its ok for those at the top to earn huge profits off our labor we should give it willingly for the good of either the country(as in Nazism) or for God(as in Opus Dei). The fact that the current Pope is an ex-Nazi, former head of the part of the church that used to run the infamous "Inquisitions" and a supporter of OPus Dei concerns me as a Catholic and as an advocate of workers rights. Both Nazism and Opus Dei are extremely anti-union, anti-socialist and anti-democratic.

As time goes by we can only hope that the truth comes out about what really went on in this industry over the last three years. I can tell you for a fact that long before Sept11, 2001 Airline workers were targeted by the industry and the government who both resented paying us a decent wage. The lies about too many seats (try and get one!), or an airline with 60 planes dictating ticket prices for the entire industry, can not stand the test of time in a free and Democratic society, however with the resurgance of fascism, cloaked behind a perpetual war on terrorism, the false patriotism that demands that we give up the Freedoms we claim we are defending and now the take over the largest Christian church in the world who knows how much longer the masses will even be allowed to question those who supposedly "God" put in control.

By the way in most of the Socialist Eurpoean states BK means liquidation and I've never seen anyone in those Socialist states take paycuts like we have.

Every once in a while some newshound hops onto something like this and presents it as a new development, but it's actually old news. My source at AA told me six months ago the summer buildup wouldn't be as large as in previous years, and we've known for some time that domestic would shrink by about 4% this year, with a 4% increase on international.

The upside of all this is that with a smaller summer peak, there won't be as much of a fall pulldown as usual.

I think it is all just a shell game, as far as reduction in domestic is concerned. More international crews are flying domestic legs.

What makes you say it's a smaller summer peak?

There won't be a summer peak as you've known it in years past. ASM's might go up, but if you look at daily departures for March, April, May, June, and July, and they're fairly flat. I'd guess that the number of bidlines would remain fairly flat as well.

Heard a rumor of temporary fleet reductions. Supposed to be announced within the next few days. Guess some planes are going to the desert for a while..... anyone else heard anything to this effect?

Tulsa has been told of 20-35 MD-80's to be grounded. Differing numbers from different managers.

Pratt and Whitney engine production cut by 100 engines this year. 30% reduction in production schedule.

Work force already being shuffled on letter with union.

But hey, management bonus issues are top priority right now.

And sadly, a longer wait for recalls for the FAs on the furlough list.

I agree with you that most people in the know were already painfully aware that this summer would not see as much seasonal increases as in previous summers. Arpey and Beer themselves said so quite a while ago.

But when the Financial Times can get Joyner to discuss specifics, it becomes newsworthy.

My exuberance wasn't necessarily due to the surprise at learning about reduced summer capacity - it was due to seeing AA stick to its plan and not suddenly announcing a bunch of new summer flights.

I've heard low to mid 20's. Perhaps the conflicting information comes from whether or not their source is counting the 20 or so ex-TW MD80's already in the desert which are now being parted out.

So that would be 20 or so in addition to the TWA birds or includes them?

Could of used one on that PVD route... :p :p

Was told yesterday that no new routes were announced but we do have our seasonal stuff coming back. Rome is already back and some caribbean freqencies will increase.

We were also told that the summer flying will continue until after labor day, unlike last year where the schedules got flat mid august.

VM positions will be on the bid sheet to offset the decrease in open replacement flying. Reserve is expected to increase by 200 system wide in June because of the anticipated decrease in open replacement and to cover the summer flying.

Any loss of airplanes is bad news. Does anyone have any information regarding whether the 20-25 includes the old TWA planes?

At this rate I am going to be junior for a long, long time.
