American Airlines warns of further job cuts

There aren't other areas who've seen four RIFs this year?

This is about the least surprising thing I've seen all year. Things are getting even uglier than anyone predicted in the job market. We are desperate and heading into a dark low season.

Please dont tell me there thinking about cutting AMT's again!! I dont even want to hear them say that !! There is so much work right now that if they did cut Amts's this time its going to bite them in there you know big time ...

Word is there will be between 80 and 200 upgrades in Tulsa between October and January to fill the A300 retirement lines and the 757 Maui mod lines......I'll believe it when they hand me paperwork to get out of the shop, after all being on RIF in a shop job for almost 6.5 years we constantly hear we are going back to the docks....ya right.

That is what they are telling us as they are starting A300 GENFAM classes soon.

Getting close to upgrade time to make room for AFW OSM's that might want to relocate when they shutter the hangar there. I heard the AMT's are going to DFW Delta Hangar and the OSM's are coming to Tulsa. Smoke Box Rumor says both AFW and MCI will be gone by this time next year. With 48 more MD-80's removed from service and Fred Cleveland gone to American Eagle.

Maybe for some. One of the guys who quit AA a couple of years back because he didnt think things would get better informed us that he is at $43/hr working for Con Ed.

Even in bad times people with certain skill sets are in high demand.

AA isnt planning on laying off any AMTs this year.

The fact is that AA expects to lose 300 to 400 mechanics a year, and there aren't replacements out there. Not only is the airline industry competeing with Utilities and other industries that pay better and offer better security and benifits but they are competing with a change in culture where todays kids arent willing to give up their weekends, sleeping at night and definately dont want to work outside.

According to the ATA the projected shortage of mechanics is even more acute than the shortage of pilots. I wouldnt go into this career again, my kids most certainly will not follow me, and the way things are going I probably will not stay till retirement. many feel the same way.

This is a worldwide trend, companies all over the world are having trouble finding people who posess the skillsets needed to work on aircraft who are willing to work for what they want to pay.

You may be going to the line. We have quite a few guys retiring and nobody to replace them. Several were holding out for the VBRS, they probably dont want to face another winter so if you figure in sick time burn we should see a wave in late winter. The companys new return to work policy makes the sick burn easier than ever. Its pretty easy for any 60 year old to say he can lift and carry 60lbs without pain. Its also common for them to have diabetes, high blood pressure etc.

At NY1 we had around 300 names on the recall list in 2005. When they decided to fill vacancies they started calling 20 at a time, then they went to 60. Well they exhausted the list. There arent any more left. At least a third of those who are in New York have their transfers in to other stations. Right now the station is fat, they've eliminated OT, my suspicion is they are doing this because they figure that if they run the station lean, like they are in MIA and DFW, the guys in NY1 would pressure the company to come to the table with less demands and more money. The company and the International know that NY1 is a NO vote on the contract, by pouring OT all over some of the line stations in the low cost areas (even though some still havent exhausted their recall lists and are running under staffed) it keeps the guys happy and they can sneak in a host of new concessions while only giving "2 to 3%" raises as the International was quoted recently.

So far my impression is that this round of negotiations is the mop up session. The company is going to get what little they missed in 2003. Seniority will be irrelevant. In the end we will still have the worst OT rules, the least amount of paid vacation, the fewest holidays and the least amont of sick time. By the time this contract is over we will be on the bottom in pay as well.

Bob,

You are describing another successful round of TWU negotiations.

I have watched for 25 years now.

The TWU comes out bold and talks a good game.

Halfway through, they work hard to lower expectations.

Then in the end, the company gets what it wants.

This time next year, the TWU will be soliticing Retirement Medical signups.

If they could negotiate and represent as well as they sell insurance, we would likely have never seen a card drive to oust their sorry asses.

Bob-

I think a lot of you would do very well to switch industries. While the supply/demand phenominon is very much in play for your skill set, the days when airlines could afford to compete over you are clearly long gone. Just look at what the other big airlines have done with major MRO: ship it offshore to Asia and Central America.

As always I wish you guys like in contract talks. But if you have the opportunity to switch industries at the same or better pay level, I'd take it. Others will recover faster than airlines, who have a tough time turning a profit even when times are good.
