AMFA Representation in the Airline Industry

Since its inception (1962), AMFA has only represented mechanics and related employees at a total of 13 airlines-Ozark Airlines (1966), Pacific Airlines (1967), Airlift International (1967), Hughes Airwest (1970), Southern Airways (1978), Braniff (1989), Trump Shuttle (1990), Atlantic Coast Airlines (1994), Mesaba Airlines (1996), Alaska Airlines (1998), Northwest Airlines (1999), American Trans Air (2002). Southwest (2003). Out of these 13 airlines, 7 no longer exist. Overall, aside from its representation at Northwest Airlines, AMFA's history as a labor union is less than remarkable. Even in the past ten years, AMFA has had little success in its representation efforts, having lost 10 out of 17 attempts. AMFA has active organizing drives at a number of airlines, including Delta, Federal Express, and American, but has yet to file with the NMB for representation at any of them.

Union Membership

AMFA became a formal union in 1963 and still has only one Dictator. The reason is, Delle changes the Constitution as needed to ensure he remains in power. Up until 1998, AMFA was one of the smallest and least significant labor unions in the United States. Even now, AMFA represents technicians and related support personnel at only six airlines. Its membership increased significantly in 1998 and 1999 due to its successful raids of the IAM at Alaska and Northwest Airlines. AMFA's membership is still small, even though union supporters may boast that AMFA has grown a lot in a few short years. The reality is that AMFA has struggled to get the few members they do have-and have only done so by winning large groups of workers in only a handful of election wins-like the 9500 employees picked up at Northwest Airlines in 1999. In fact, over 55% of AMFA's membership comes from only one airline, Northwest Airlines. The following chart summarizes the number of AMFA members over the past seven years, based upon their LM-2 reports.

Organizing

Over the past ten years, AMFA filed for a representation election with the NMB 17 times. Discounting its successful raids of the IAM at previously unionized Alaska and Northwest, the only successes AMFA has had organizing non-union employees are at Atlantic Coast Airlines, Mesaba Airlines, and American Trans Air. AMFA has failed in all other efforts. Far from joining AMFA in record numbers, AMFA's own record shows otherwise-workers reject them.

AMFA Record Over the Last 10 Years
10 losses, in non-union settings and raids of other unions

3 election wins in non-union setting.

4 successful raids of other unions.

1 successful defeat of raid attempt.

AMFA has also included Horizon, United and Southwest Airlines in the last 2 years. If you take in to account the Layoffs amfa holds the record with the highest Percentage of Members on Layoff Around 33% of their Members.

Total is less than 20,000 members. Keep in Mind they do not believe in Overhaul Bases. Once they achieve to represent an Airline it is not soon afterwards the Overhaul Bases start closing.

Delle receives over 122,000 plus expenses, he is guaranteed this for life. Where as Leaders of other Unions rely on the company they work for their retirement income.

You need to also note amfa is in the red based on their Lm-2 report
