Atheism

This seems to go toward proving Sparrows point about faith as opposed to religious participation.

Religious service attendance

"Americans misreport how often they vote, how much they give to charity, and how frequently they use illegal drugs. People are not entirely accurate in their self-reports about other areas as well. Males exaggerate their number of sexual partners, university workers are not very honest about reporting how many photocopies they make. Actual attendance at museums, symphonies and operas does not match survey results. We should not expect religious behavior to be immune to such misreporting." Kirk Hadaway, a sociologists at the United Church of Christ, (1993) 1,2
"... despite the rhetoric, active religious participation remains a minority interest in American life." Tom Flynn, writer for Free Inquiry magazine, (1998). 2

Reported attendance at religious services by Americans and Canadians:
Item USA Canada
Attend at least weekly 43% 20%
Never/almost never attend 8% 38%

This data is taken from the Millennium Study by Taylor Nelson Sofres Intersearch in 1999. 3

For years, pollsters have been asking adult Americans whether they go to religious services regularly. Typically, the specific question asks whether they attended a service during the previous weekend. The results have been relatively constant over time. Some recent estimates are:

38% by the National Opinion Research Center
44% by the Institute for Social Research's World Values survey. This institute is located at the University of Michigan. 4
The Barna Research Group reported that in 2005, "47% of American adults [said that they] attend church in a given weekend, not including a special event such as a wedding or a funeral." 5 In earlier years, attendance varied from 37% to 49%:
1991: 49%
1992: 47%
1996: 37%
1997: 43%
2000: 40%
2001: 42%
2002: 43%
2004: 43%
The Gallup Poll conducts yearly polls asking the question: "Did you, yourself, happen to attend church or synagogue in the last seven days, or not?" They reported the following attendance levels. 6 The margin of error is ±2%:
1992: 40%
1993: 40%
1994: 42%
1995: 43%
1996: 38%
1997: 40%
1998: 40%
1999: 43%
2000: 44%
2001: 41%
2002: 44%
2003: 41%
40% by National Election Studies. Their poll shows that in 1996, 25% of adult Americans claimed to attend church, synagogue or temple every week; 12% almost every week; 16% once or twice a month, 18% a few times a year, and 30% never. 7 Assuming that "almost every week" means 3 weeks out of 4, then these data indicate 40% attendance.
The Gallup Organization measured attendance at 41% during 2001-MAY. 8

To say that I'm disillusioned about organized religion here would be like saying the sky is blue.

If you go, sit in a pew, listen to the pastor's sermon and leave it will probably not be to bad for you and it might do some good. However, get even a little involved in the Day to Day and to borrow a phrase "We got a whole new ball game".

For some it's even simpler to become disenfranchised and disillusioned. Classic example, You're devout Catholic and you open up the newspaper and read an article on the musical chairs game the church played with pedophile Priests & you're thinking, "WAIT A MINUTE, all that money I've been putting in the offering plate has been going to hide priests from justice?" The end starts subtlety as "You know the big game is on, I think maybe I'll mow the lawn beforehand, they won't miss me at mass". Then the offering envelopes get a bit lighter. Next, Father Boneaboy visits to inquire on all of the above and you don't like the tone of the conversation and now shazaam you've just become a "fallen away Catholic" as they've seen your ass & wallet for the absolute last time.

The above repeats itself every day in every denomination as more and more people begin to figure it out that the church has become a rest home for saints instead of safe haven for sinners. At times of personal tragedy you seek that safe harbor only to find platitudes and glad handing instead of spiritual guidance. It's not easy to have your life crash down around you ever. But if you're a believer and you find yourself dismissed out of hand by the Church you've supported all your life with your labor and money, if you're like me you withdraw and seek solace and spiritual meaning elsewhere possibly from within.

Years back, my Pastor once said to me in a moment of Frustration at a Trustee meeting I'll apparently never forget. "Bob, Some Christians are so Heavenly minded that they serve no earthly good". Funny thing is knew exactly who he was referring to. Little did he know that was the night I decided not to accept a renewal of my spot on the Board of Trustee's. WHY? Because we spent 2 meetings of three hour duration each debating whether to spend $347.27 so Pastors car could have Air Conditioning.

U.S. SUPREME COURT #### SLAPS ATHEIST LOSER

High court spurns atheist's 'under God' challenge: The justices denied review Monday, without comment, of Newdow's appeal on behalf of the Freedom From Religion Foundation and a New Hampshire family. They wanted the court to overturn a ruling in November by a federal appeals court in Boston that the daily schoolroom pledge to "one nation under God" was a patriotic exercise, not an endorsement of religion.

Somewhere there's a poor lonely fur-ball sobbing in his pillow.

Nice how you try to slide the COTUS amongst the fairy tails. You go right ahead and believe that the earth is a flat 6,000 yr old rock where man and dinosaur walked the earth together.

Exactly how self centered do you need to be to believe that you have the right god and everyone one else had it wrong?

Its a proven issue.....I have a map:

26 out of 50 is not too bad. I am surprised they found that many willing to fly the banners. I guess $$$ beat ethics/morals. Go figure.
