Do you still have power in the greater TUL area ??

Got a generator ??

Check in soon(if you can) to let us know !

Times like this, Politics take a back seat !!

I spoke with a friend in Tulsa this afternoon. Her power went off about 9am and was still off at 4:30pm. However, I just got an email from her awhile ago that said the power had come back on and seemed to be staying on (after coming on and going off about 3 times earlier).

She said that Tulsa airport closed down completely today because the terminal lost power; so TSA had no way to screen and they wouldn't let anyone through security. Of course, it would have shut down anyway because later the tower lost electricity.

It's not supposed to freeze there tonight, but some high winds tomorrow are expected to bring more trees down. Her neighbor has a tree through the roof already.

I'm glad I'm down here in Dallas. Though it got cold last night with a brutal wind chill, it's about 45 tonight.

It rained all night...froze to the trees and driveways, but the streets don't seem too bad yet. It is supposed to keep it up all day and get worse. No issues with power since all the powerlines in my area are underground. Since I had foot surgery and have pins in the bones of my big toe, footing is not particularly good for me, so I'm staying home for the day.

Hey Bears,

Its devastation over much of the state with all the downed trees, power lines, and poles. I've been here 20+ years and have never seen anything like it. The local news is saying its the worst power outage in the states History and estimated that at one point 1 in 3 Oklahomans were without electricity, and we're just starting winter here. January is usually the coldest and hardest down this way.

The power is being brought up slowly and PSO is saying a week to ten downs before it will be fully restored but by viewing the damage first hand I think that is a stretch at best. I did hear that power crews from all around the Southwest part of the country are coming to our aid. We're about three months out from Tornado season so the power company stays busy in Oklahoma to say the least. One thing for sure Mother Nature has a way of showing its fury here.

I am much more fortunate than most, the power is back on here at my place and other than a bunch of broken tree limbs I escaped unscathed, as soon as it thaws there will be plenty of firewood for all.

Thanks for your concern 'Ole' Friend!

"12",......sounds like you might NOT have a generator ?

I Bet "they" are FLYING out the doors at Lowes/Home Depot etc.

I'm not sure if "these" can even be found anymore, but take it from a lifelong Yankee/yankee wx.......The ONLY thing that works (car wise) is FULL tire Chains !!!!!!!!!!!

(Of course though, you'll have to dodge the "flying missles"/ OTHER DRIVERS

Keep us posted(you ol' OKIE) , and ANYONE else who's affected by this nutty wx. !!!!

KC, what the heck did you do to require pins in your big toe,

Kick a bowling ball? 😱

Good luck with the winter wonderland coming your way!

I had bunion surgery...they cut the bone, shifted the joint over, and put two pins in the toe to hold it. Just got back from the doc and they took the pins out today...kind of...I managed to break one sometime last week. So I get to have about an inch of metal growing in my bone. So far, the temps here have hovered at 32-33 degrees...It's still raining. If the temps drop, we'll have a mess here. If they stay the same - then it's just a rainy day.

Local12...looks like you guys took the brunt of this. We got enough ice to make the trees look pretty, it rained all day, but stayed above freezing, and now the rain has tapered off and they say the cloud cover should keep temps from getting too very cold tonight. There might be some patchy freezing drizzle overnight, but nothing at all like what you got.

KC, glad to hear your on the mend...I wonder what that pin in your toe would do to TSA's metal detectors?

Well the rain has finally stopped here and it remained above freezing all day so no more ice accumulation thus for. the forcast calls for a little frezzing rain after midnight but nothing like what we just experienced. The whole state was declared a disaster area today and I suspect it will be weeks possibly months before all the clean up is complete. I don't think there is a house in the Tulsa metroplex area that does'nt have broken tree limbs or in many cases downed trees, and lots of roof damage its a mess.

Bears, your right I dont have a generator. Ive managed to dodge several tornadoes, been in many, many severe thunderstorms and now this and thus for have'nt needed one. I have to take my hat off to the Oklahoma power companies for their promptness and efficiency.

I heard Generators and chain saws were all sold out, but they are shipping them in as fast as possible. stopped at quik trip for gas today, they are about the only gas stations open and thats because they had big diesel generators shipped in, but the attendant said that diesel was in short supply and he did'nt know how long they would be able to stay open. I made a comment about using Jet-A and just got that 'deer in the headlights' stare.

The good news is we did'nt need chains, the ground temp. was still warm enough that the roads did'nt ice over to bad, and the road crews sanded the bridges and over passes. Its really quite amazing due to the severity of this ice storm that we've had only 16 fatalities thus far. with all the downed power lines and stop lights not working I would expect that number to go up.

Local. They allow chains in OK? It has been a while since I have seen that. Back in the day when I lived in CA we used chains when going to the mountains. When I moved to Colorado, I put them on my car once in a storm and I got pulled over by a cop for it. Who would have thunk it? They don't use them here in Chicago either.

To be quite honest I dont know. I suspect they get used in rural farming communities from time to time, but no I can't say I've actually seen them in use here in Tulsa.

True, car/pleasure truck tire chains are a think of the past,
However, with a situation like this( the first few bad days) , i doubt a cop, worth his salt, would care, or have time to care about nit picking on the chains.

If I had a closed garage, I'd have a "Set of Baloney Skins" with chains on them, for a quick remount during real tough Ice, and deep snow storms(like the one heading this way, on sunday)
