Business as usual at JFK

And ladies and gentlemen, before we get into fisticuffs over "MY STATION IS BETTER THAN YOURS," I think we all agree that not all stations are created equal, some happen to bring more revenue than others but that does not diminish their importance.
JFK for other US carriers as well as for AA has always been a key station because it happens to be in NYC. It's demographics and reflects the city's diverse population. NY is still the financial hub of the world.

With that said, every station brings a certain value to AA's system in its own way. But I think when we start speaking of facility closures, I personally think it means AA is looking to cut the Class 2 stations as maintenance facilities and not necessarily city closures.

CLASS TWO STATIONS:

Philadelphia, Washington/Baltimore, Washington/Dulles, Tampa, Orlando, San Diego, Denver, Atlanta, Phoenix, Las Vegas, Seattle. Anymore come to mind?

These are the stations that should be concerned. AA has not made a decision yet and many are concerned.

Barfbag, I do agree with you on JFK's importance to AA, but you are replying to a quote where I spoke of business as usual about their hiring of another manager (aka supervisor). This at a time when the company announced a reduction in capacity, fleet size and employees. They are not hiring a manager (aka supervisor) because of the contract carriers.
In case you haven't heard, effective June 15, we no longer have the ZOOM Airlines maintenance contract.
Also in June, maintenance will no longer be doing MALEV's maintenance because we had to raise their rates and they said they'll get someone else on the field to do the work.
We will not be doing Mexicana's maintenance either.

Also, from June til August, AA will not be doing the maintenance on JetAirways because they will be flying an A330 and want one year's experience on that fleet.

My post was simply to bring to light that in spite of the company's financial situation and JFK management cracking down on overtime, they feel it so necessary to hire another manager (aka supervisor) to hang out in the operations tower and drink coffee.

Let's face it maintenance issues are no concern to me personally, because when the buck stops, Techs want to save their own skins at the expense of FSC or anyone else, and so they'll deals our jobs away in heartbeat. If every Tech worked just six out of eight hours, on an overnighter you wouldn't need overtime anyway.

That said, JFK FSC have been working for years under the worst circumstances. The new terminal and OAL ground services is a boon for AA, even without OAL maintenance issues.

We'll park them, dump them, load them and push them away, simple as that. We just need two things manpower, and equiptment.

JFK is making money, that's the bottom line. No other domestic station can make that claim. Bring your resources to where they are needed today.

FORT JFK awaits.

I guess you're right. MIA, DFW, ORD, they are all massive hubs that are operating at huge losses daily.

Check your boarding numbers around the system each day. Does JFK board an average of 30-35K customers every day? Try flying out of MIA some weekend. Every concourse is so crowed with ticket carrying customers you can't even get to the heads!

JFK may have more expensive tickets, but their number of passsengers boarded daily doesn't compare to any of the other three hubs.

Personally, I wish they were all so profitable that the company books were dripping wtih black ink, but with those morons in control I don't think it is ever going to happen.

Without the OAL business, (to subsidize the AA salaries) ,the large ethnic NYC communities that travel to friends and family, like GIG, GRU, PAP, the rest of the Caribbean, and South American out of JFK , JFK won't be sitting all the pretty either.

If they want el-cheapo fares to those places, let them schlep out to ISP, get on WN, pay nothing to check bags, and make 4/5 stops(with corney F/A's) to get to SEA/LAX etc.

Bears',

I don't know about you but with all the jumpseating I do on WN I'll be the first to give their F/A's high marks! You call it corney, I call it a refreshing change to the usual glum-faced, poor attitudes I see on-board some of the major's flights. They're a big part of the reason that WN keeps it's customers coming back.

Question....when was the last time you ACTUALLY flew on WN? Or is this just sour grapes on your part that WN has more pricing power in the domestic market than AA or the rest of the majors? I suspect your attitude has more to do with envy than reality.

I know you love your former employer but I think you're postings will earn a lot more respect if you'd be a BIT more objective....unless of course it's your desire to show how subjective (read HOMER) you are. Not a slam, just an observation.

Cheers mate!

I guess you weren't around when mechanics did all the push backs and deicing. I recall line cargo was more than willing to take those two functions a long time ago at the expense of the mechanics. Many a mechanic hit the street when that transition occurred. And i don't recall and line cargo or fsc person shedding a tear for us.

LAX has been carrying AA for years!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Looks to me like everyone is debating which leg holds up the table-they all do!

Is that an attempt at rationalizing your own guilt? Predicting what mechanics would do in order to justify what Fleet has done?

Give me an example of how mainteneance has taken away Fleet Service work. You already gave two examples of where fleet has agreed to do mechanics work "We'll park them","and push them away". When fleet started doing that mechanics jobs dissapears in dozens of stations across the system and thousands of job were not created as AA expanded. Fleet had no objections to negotiating away thousands of A&P job despite the fact that many mechanics came from Fleet and the more jobs available in maintenance the more opportunity there is for those in Fleet that want to upgrade.
