Has anyone worked a Buy on Board flight yet? Any feedback?

My friend came into DFW this morning from HNL and said that it was very easy and only a handful of passengers were unaware of B.O.B. It was catered 100 per cent, and will be in the beginning, so he and his crew were dealing with 147 turkey wraps (flight wasn't full) along with the other shelf stable items. Only about 25 wraps were sold in main cabin and maybe about 15 of the snack boxes were sold.
The only gripe was the presentation of the turkey wrap...it's sold in a plastic bag similar to a typical plastic lunch bag...and it was a bit smashed as they were all catered 8 to an insert.
Because it was so easy and fast, his crew, along with other f/a's here at IDF, fully expect the loss of another crew member (8 down to 7) since there really won't be a need for a dedicated galley anymore.

I heard from another SLT f/a who had worked a BOB domestic flight that of the 25 boxes of gerbil food they were catered, they sold 3.

Yet the demand must be there because we got an HI6 that said they were increasing non transcon provisioning from 20% to 30%.

I cannot imagine why anyone would want to eat the stuff.

I haven't had the AA boxes, but the UA boxes aren't bad at all. However, often the presentation/marketing is terrible. Menu descriptions give you no real idea what you'll get (or make it sound gross), small pictures if any, FA's not interested in selling the boxes. It needs a bit of a mind-set change on the part of FAs -- not in a pushy way, but they need to "sell" the boxes. If they have no idea what's in the box, or what it tastes like, then they won't sell many. I believe at some airlines they've had tastings for FAs so they actually no product.

Have any of the airlines added an incentve component for FAs, so there's some financial incentive to sell BOB boxes?

Sky high states: Yes. At US, the catering company rewards the best sellers.
Catering now tries to best match SUPPLY WITH DEMAND. Most times, you have just enough OR you run out of meals prior to making it through the entire cabin. You can get irates when that happens!

Wouldnt AA lose money if you sell less than you catered ?
What can AA do with the left over boxes? Trash or for next flight ?

By Removing the food, AA saved approximately $30,000,000.00. The shelf stable items are re-usable and the perishable items are only a percentage of what was previously boarded.

We now have food on 300 flights a day that previous departed without. The industry is in a new era. But anyone who knows this industry knows that everything is cyclical.

Food is food when you're hungry.

Those of us hired before 1992 will remember the hockey pucks. For the younger crowd, they were these disgusting little roast beef sandwiches the diameter of a Coke can.

If people were willing to eat those without complaining....

Ok, I have now worked two BOB flights. Though, the contents still do not appeal as far as I am concerned, we sold 15 of the boxes on the DFW-BDL flight on Friday evening. (Of course, we also sold $110 in liquor. We had 2 big groups of friends traveling together. One group had just been skiing; the other to Puerto Vallarta. This was the "end of the party" party.)

Coming back on Saturday morning, we sold fewer boxes, but we also sold some of the "fresh" component--a turkey and cheese sandwich on croissant with slices of hardboiled egg on it. I guess the egg slices and the croissant are what made it a "breakfast" component.

Passengers who had anything to say were complimentary of the boxes. No accounting for taste, the old lady said as she kissed the cow.

P.S. You can all get ready for the second coming/end of the world. On both flights, every passenger except one had exact change. Run for your lives! All is lost!

I was #1 on 2 "BOB" segments last week...the #2 and #4 were in no danger of selling out (SLC).

I actually bought the breakfast "BOB" because I was full in F/C and starving from an early am sign-in.

I probably wouldn't purchase this if I were travelling. I enjoyed the bagel chips and cream cheese but the Craisins were too sweet (added sugar and false strawberry flavoring). I didn't care for them at all. The Nutri-Grain bar was nice. The mint? I don't take them in a restaurant. Kind of a useless afterthought. A piece of sugarless gum might be better.

The dinner one I wouldn't purchase because I don't eat beef. The salami is apparently the best thing on it.

We could probably sell more if it it was "turkey jerky" or turkey pepperoni. Turkey is a less offensive meat than ham or beef.

There are certain markets we fly to where you shouldn't serve pork (and it ain't Hawaii, BTW...LOL!). Umm, check the only 3-class transcons that exist, Centreport.

I've sampled that processed cheese...NASTY!

"Hot component"

We'll probably sell more of. Not a bad deal for $3 compared to BK's airport prices. If they changed it to turkey ham and boiled egg, it would probably sell more.

The turkey wrap appears to be the one from the F/C cold plate cycle and it can be quite good, depending on the catering station.

Many of these catering stations should be told that capers and gorgonzola cheese are accents, not a main ingredient.

If I work more "BOB" flights, I'll keep you posted. Let's see, there is "BOB", and "TED", and Alice, and whats-her-name...this industry is something. Is it Carol?
