Cabin Jumpseat Safety Policy

Ok not to be mean, but if you need an extension can you fit through a window exit?

I think that is why I find extra butter pats from meal services stashed away in the galley compartments. In case of emergency evacuation it may be necessary for some of our "Flight Attendants Of Size" to grease their hips to squeeze themselves out.

That explains why I keep finding butter pats missing from my DTW-PHX NRSA F Meals whenever we get upgraded 🙂

If that's the case then it is news to me. I haven't read anything on that but will see if I can find out the 411 on that when I report for my next trip.

Yes, its true.
On the West side, no more buckling in the jumpseat or Recurrent Passport required.
However, they do plan to monitor during recurrent evac who can or cannot buckle on the jumpseat.
There was no mention tho of what would be the course of action should you not fit into the jumpseat seatbelt during recurrent.
Previously, if a FA could not buckle into the jumpseat in the sup's office prior to recurrent, they were put out, I guess on medical? or mebbe just unpaid leave?, and had to weigh in on a schedule and "show progress" each time until they were able to fit again.

Ok I am a 32 inch waist and there are a few jumpseat straps on our east 757's and certainly 737-400's with the retractable straps that I JUST buckle on me. They are clearly the wrong size strap. I'm not sticking up for those that I have to fight with to get half of my rump on the seat but......

"Wow, you look really great. You really wear that jumpseat well! Do you work out?"

Remind me again why it's okay to show prejudice and bigotry towards large people, but the same sorts of jokes about race or sexual orientation are taboo? Are large people just a safe way to let all that hatred out?

Heck we know all there is to know about genetic mutation and predisposition to eating problems and psycological problems that manifest themselves in weight problems, right? Fatty's are just too lazy to be as skinny as us, right?

No, it's for health reasons.
Simply put they need to back away from the table and move a bit more.

It can be a little bit more than that.

Take for instance an underactive or non-fuctioning thyroid. It can almost impossible to loose weight. Or loosing weight takes a long time. And the company wants to put people on the street until they loose the weight?

I think a more reasonable action from the company would be to give those with overweight issues a time limit to loose it before they put them out of work.

Bravo to AFA and the company for finally enforcing this issue!

Last month I had to sit in a FC passenger seat because a jumpseat in the front of an AB was MEL. Out of curiousity we were wondering what was wrong with it so I sat on it and the seat just fell half way to the floor. Hmmmm.

No one said it was okay to show prejudice or bigotry.

Criticism of people's choices are not considered "prejudice or bigotry".
Race or sexual orientation are not viewed as a choice, by intelligent people.
Mostly, over-weight conditions are considered a choice.

Hope this helps.

Ok, here's a reminder for you. . . it's more about changing your lifestyle; getting some physical activity and watching what you eat then it is your genetic predisposition. Many of us have genetics that make it easy to gain weight, unfortunately few combat the genetics with exercise! And the older you get the harder it's going to be. So if you are one of those pushing 40 then YES you are going to have to work a bit harder. So if you want to keep your job accept it.

Another reason. . . safety. How can you assist passengers in an emergency if you are fat and unfit. So it is discriminatory? No, it's a job REQUIREMENT (or it's suppose to be).

That's what recurrent training is about. F/a's are accessed for their ability to assess and totally open the doors and window exits for emergency evacuation. And if they can't get through the window exit, they are pulled off the line.
