Cable companies, telephone companies, oil companies and banks to name a few, are allowed to merge and create huge monopolies with little or no scrutiny by federal regulators. HOWEVER, if two airlines want to merge, OMG !!! Congress gets their panties all in an uproar and acts like it's the downfall of civilazation as we know it. All SORTS of horrible things are going to happen. Fares will go up! What about the raping we are all getting from the oil companies that affect EVERYONE? Not everyone flies but we all drive or pay higher charges because our goods have to be trucked. Congress TALKS about investigations but nothing seems to happen and the monopolies charge what they want and the current administration calls it free enterprise or market prices. :down:

They can and will. This wasn't a merger, this was an attempt at a hostile takeover, period. As Mr. Grinstein stated earlier, there has never been a hostile takeover between U.S. carriers.

Well Mr. Grinstein must have a short memory span. Is he forgetting about the takeover of Continental by Texas International and the takeover of Frontier by PEOPLExpress?

These were "hostile" takeovers that employees of Continental and Frontier fought hard to prevent....even as far as trying to (unsuccesfully) establish ESOP programs to stop the takeovers (later called "mergers")from happening.

There is very little to no evidence that REGULATORS fear mergers. Regulators dance to the tune of legislation which is crafted by politicians, which, over the long term, reflect the society's fears. There is far more fear of mergers from employees and small town folk that expect big town benefits at no cost.
