Besides first class I have always wondered WHY airlines MUST serve you anything for free. If you take Greyhound you are not given a drink or tokens to use at rest stops included in your bus fare. When you take Amtrak you are not given ANYTHING for free unless you have purchased a private room or are in first class (the quiet car). Considering the expense it costs the airline for fuel, the basic infrastructure involved in getting you and your bag from point A to point B is something the bus and train don't have to deal with. I don't like the idea of selling basic beverages nor do I think it will go over well but I don't honestly see why the airlines are held to different guidelines as other means of transportation. If I'm hungry on Amtrak you go to the snack car and pay for everything including the beloved pretzel. A can of soda if I remember correctly is $1.25. Why is flying on an airplane treated any different?

It's because Amtrak is a monopoly. If there were only one airline, "AmAir" would do the same thing.

When you are on an a/c and in a ground stop over 30 minutes the crew is to offer water and then so on depending on delay. Why is the train or bus not required to do this? If your on the bus in gridlock on the turnpike whats to drink? I think the airlines are held to a different standard yet they are merely buses with wings. Well at least when I'm referring to Usairways anyway. As for the selling, this would take MUCH more time than just passing through the cabin with a regular beverage service. They better think of adding another flight attendant cause I won't be doing the hustle down the aisle trying to get the card reader to work. Hmmmm mmmmm NO WAY.

On a train, you can get up out of your seat whenever you want. It's illegal for me to get out of my seat on a plane while on the ground, unless we're sitting there long enough, in which case, please direct me to the cafe section of the airplane so I can buy a drink.

Oh, and the "cafe section" can't be the galley. I can walk into the cafe car on a train whenver I want, as many times as I want, without getting arrested after being told "sir please return to your seat NOW".

I have no problem with the flight attendants keeping passengers out of the galley. That's your space, not mine. But that means if I'm thirsty, I'm going to ring the flight attendant call button and you are going to get me some water.

I'll tell you why, because its always been part of the cost of your ticket. If you want to pay 3 dollars less and pay for every little extra cost go fly airtran, pay for luggage, pay for drinks, pay for snacks now you paid more than if you just flew US to begin with. Same as Allegiant.

sky high states: I understand where Travelpro is coming from. If you check Greyhound.com....they have a seven day advance purchase BUS fare from NY to MCO for $79.00. Also, check Amtrak.com. They have a TRAIN fare for $113.00 ONE WAY. Then, check out Jetblue.com...they have a fare for $79.00.

...........so?....two days on the Bus. 24 hours on the train? or 2 hours on an aircraft?

ALL FOR THE SAME PRICE OR LOWER THEN GROUND TRAVEL.

Air travel is changing whether the employees and customers like it or not. Adjusting expectations is difficult, but eventually people do adjust and those who look for opportunities will find them and thrive. Just as consumers have taken over responsibility for researching fares and buying ther tickets online rather than through travel agents, passengers will accept responsibility for feeding and watering themselves as a matter of course.

We're not headed back to the 1970's anytime soon.

I absolutely understand where your coming from but if you are on a Greyhound bus that is backed up in traffic due to weather or whatever on the turnpike you can't get off the bus to get a drink now can you? I have no trouble offering drinks while seated and certainly don't have a problem with running for a call bell. I know many do. I just don't understand the governing bs about AIRLINES in particular being held to different standards when in some cases passengers are most definitely paying the same price. Price any of those closets they call rooms on Amtrak to Florida from DC or Philly and just look at the price they charge. It's amazing what people expect from an airline when you really think of it. Any airline.
