I have the opportunity to buy the David Clark H10-76XL headsets for a good price it they say they are for military, does that mean they will not be able to be used in normal planes? i would call David Clark, but they are closed for the holidays, and I need to know asap.

Depends on, first, the connector(s), and the type of speakers. Aviation headsets use high impedance speakers (300 ohm...and if you put them on a regular 80 ohm audio system, it will block out some audio channels). Those in your iPod earbuds, or any other regular set of earphones are 80 ohm (which, ironically, is what is found in some military headsets).

And then there are the connectors. HOW THEY DIFFER!!!

That page will help you tell what kind of connector you end up with on your new-found headsets.

Now, where are you buying them? Are they on auction from the government, or are you buying it from an aviation catalog (Aircraft Spruce and Specialty also carries that exact same model "military" headset for civilian aircraft use.

I have a SoftComm C-40 headset with FRASCA branding on the earcups. The headset is old, and I'm also thinking of upgrading to a David Clark (H10-30 for me, possibly with the Oregon Aero upgrade kit).
