the same thing happened to a Gol 737 in Brazil over the weekend. 
 
also in Latin America, an AA 767's flap system failed at GIG. 
DL carried the passengers home.

The flap system didnt fail, a rod from the actuator broke and had to be replaced.
 
thanks for clarifying....either way the flight cancelled.... just as it undoubtedly did with the DL and G3 flights.

Sorta related: W/R/T security searches, and what all needs to be checked, I wonder if there is a verifiable rise (or not) in these being left open, separating in flight, etc.? Given the other protocols in place, I doubt it, but it'd be interesting to look at...

Smart move to head over to JFK.

Would have been much, much worse had they landed on the aircraft carrier La Guardia...
