There is a restaurant called "Six Bells" worth checking out. Claims to be the oldest, circa 1500s? Not too far from Gatwick. Has interesting history.
Delta is a very good airline going through a rough period. Don't expect the finest culinary experience; consider yourself lucky to get any food at all. Bring your own food; always be totally self-sufficient when traveling...food, entertainment, medications, batteries, rechargers, power converters, ziploc bags etc...and an extra bag or lots of space to bring stuff home!
