Plane had damage in-flight and returned to the field.

Looks like they did a great job. No injuries little damage and little fan fare.

Delta Air Lines issued a statement saying the plane turned around "for precautionary reasons. The flight landed normally and the passengers deplaned normally."

In the dirt next to the runway is not normal.

Also, there is picture of hydraulic component laying on top of the wing attached by only the wiring. It is Just inboard of the inboard right aileron and fwd of the spoiler with the access panel missing.

Good picture here:

Indeed.

As is often the case with the Widget, what's not said is usually as important as what is.

Remember Concorde? That was just a piece of FOD.

A piece of a steel belted tire spinning at 100mph or so would have a hell of a lot of inertia to it. Looks like it went thru where it's mostly void for the rear slat. If so, there'd be nothing to slow it down.

My point is that those areas are manufactured knowing that this can happen.

I have recovered aircraft after tire bursts and have never seen that much damage as a result. It will be interesting to read the final report from the engineers on this.

Agree. The way he left the runway on landing may also be an indicator that there was a larger failure as you said, i.e brakes.

What was said is that the plane landed normally. Passengers were not evacuated. Looks to be in a remote area. Not off the runway. Looks to ME like it is in a area that it was directed to so that the fuse plugs could blow out with out injuring anyone. That is why it is sitting in that squatted position. The places that tower direct you to sometimes do not have the weight baring and is too small for the aircraft. Also this area is may not be well lighted so he could be to the side of the taxiway. If those tires blow with out the fuse plugs working it could have the effect of a 500 lb.bomb.This is normal and seems well done. But then I have no first hand knowledge just MY best guess.

It was initially reported as a runway excursion. It appears that they had a normal landing, then taxiing to the gate they ran off of the taxiway. I am surprised they did not stop as soon as they got off the runway and had a tow in.

That was procedure at NWA with any hyd system failure.

One thing I am sure of...they did not taxi off the concrete on purpose.

From an airline friend of a friend of a friend who was on the flight:

"He stated he heard would sounded like a tire blowing out. I'm guess it was between V1 and Vr because he said the ride got rough. When they landed the right reverser did not come out and that the left reverser was still out when they stopped."

I think I remember one of the panels in that area of the wing hinged, and the walking beam would push it up slightly on extension/retraction. It's been a long time tho...

That panel was on the 200 I believe and not on the 300. Towing to the gate is well after the tire overheat problem is solved and at the Captains Discretion.Different problems have different solutions. Blown tires ,wing damage many unknowns lead to an overweight landing.Lots of check list ..lots of communications problems (language,f/a's,tower,ground control, fire rescue, just a lot of thing happening at once)if they taxi into trouble then it must have been minor potatoes because there is an air stair and no slides. Been there

Yes, that panel was on the -200. I wasn't sure if the -300 had the same thing
