I have noticed that in the Conley request for release that he mentions himself (International Administrative Vice President) and he mentions International President James Little but he does not mention whether or not the International had the consent of the negotiating team before taking action.

The International's record negotiating with American is not a good one. IMHO they have proven to be less than lackluster. I'd rather not have the International calling the shots for us.

Here is the latest update on www.514defenders.org

March 12, 2010

Kevin and I support the request to be released from mediated negotiations if it was done at the advice of our negotiating team.

What Kevin and I are leery of is the International taking action without the negotiation teams consent.
Kevin and I are less than happy with International interference in the negotiating process in the past and feel the International should be kept at arm's length (like staying in New York and worrying about other problems).

It is my personal opinion that, based on past performance, the International lacks the fortitude to allow us to fight for and earn the pay and benefits we deserve.

In Solidarity,

Dennis

The negotiating team is a bunch of idiots. Company and Union, look where they have all gotten us now. With the unions negotiating team keystone cops antics, they can't even decide what to get on their pizzas. Not endorsing the internationals antics either, but someone has to decide what we should be doing in this FUBARd mess.

With Secret Negotiations, I guess the best we can expect is to wonder what the hell is really going on.

I have a question about the request to be released. How did you find out ? the membership in my local found out by the local news on television. I suppose along with secret negotiations we have secret release. Possibly we can ask the local news what the sticking points are in negotiations?

No info from my local either, but I did hear about it before the news because I got the information from the DFW maint. local through an email before it was on the news that day. I had to tell my shop stewarts that we asked for a release, and they claimed I was just stirring the pot. I get all my info from them or the NY local usually a couple days before my local lets it out. I did call my local about it after getting the email and being told by my shop stewarts it wasn't real, and the local claimed they didn't know that the intl was going to ask for the release until it was done, although they did say it was okay by them. I hope they get on the same page if we have to strike. Below is what was sent to me with a link to the news releases.

Local 565,

TWU asks federal mediators to be released from negotiations with American

The Transport Workers Union, which represents 28,000 workers at American Airlines, has filed for "release" from federal mediated talks with the Fort Worth-based carrier.
This is the first step towards a possible strike.
"We have been at the bargaining table for years and will continue to work toward agreements, but it's time that we moved the settlement process to the next step," said TWU Air Transport Division Director John Conley.
Under the Railway Labor Act, unions cannot strike without first asking the National Mediation Board to declare an impasse to seek release from negotiations. If the federal board decides to release the union from mediation, a 30-day cooling off period must expire before a strike or a lockout. http://aa.twu.org

BINGO!

Expect less than adequate with the appearance of "fighting" the good fight for your interest.

This Union has conducted business in this manner for along time now.

They probably fear the next card drive more than the company.

If Jim Little and his international accomplices try to sneak another bad contract in, they will be looking over their shoulders for the rest of their lives. 😛h34r:

I may eat my words, but the TWU will not take you out on strike.

I share your concerns. The events of last month only made me more concerned.

The last time the M&R committee met Steve Luis made a motion to remove JR Ruiz from the M&R Chairman position. This was at least Steve's second attempt to remove JR. I only realized why later.

Should we go before the NMB for a final round of negotiations before they release us Hoglander already told the TWU that only the International and maybe the Chairman would be allowed to be there.

This meeting took place before I became a part of the committee.

There is no way that JR would agree to a 3% 3% 3 year contract like Steve Luis, Steve Gilboy and the majority of the committee have twice put in front of the company. So, they have to get JR out of that Chairmans spot so they could put someone in there who would agree to that.

So my prediction is that they will get JR out, replace him with either Steve Luis or Steve Gilboy-both International VPs or whatever, and then come back and say to us that the 3%, 3% 3 year deal was the best we were going to get. They will talk about how AA is on the brink of filing for BK (even though AA doesnt say that) and the NMB wont release us, ("this will get a little cash in our members pockets") the 10% unemployment, the white spaces on the dock plan, the $500 million for the pension, the price of fuel, and the fact that we have OH in house. They will tell us that we have to "be strong for our members" and fight to make them proud to be the lowest paid in the industry. That we have to "be leaders and make the tough decision" to lead them to the bottom. That by accepting the lowest pay we will showing the company how tuff we are and that "we will get em next time". Then the committee will, over the objections of a few locals , vote to bring it back.

what happened to indivdual contracts and so on

are all are contracts going to read the same across the board

i really cann't stand the international

We aren't per se.

Each class and craft applied seperately and have their own case number.

Each class and craft has their own contract but some things will likely be the same such as medical.

At the end of the day though the contracts belong to the International, look at Article 47, the parties are the International and the company, the "negotiators" from the locals are listed under the witness column.

At this point I would rather that the International take it over as I've seen what some are willing to settle for. Under current conditions if we end up the lowest paid in the industry we will be told "Thats what you local representatives negotiated". I want the International to own whatever gets brought back.

I will say this once and no more. Paul you are observant, once we settle we need to find different representation. We do not want to talk too much about it now or the International will put some poison pills in the contract same as the iam did at northwest. They do not care about us, but if they feel like they will loose us they will do any anti union thing they can think of to harm us. I do not know what is out there, but by industry standards anything is better than the twu for M@R. Just look at the companys wage charts that tells the whole story. They do a good job for the other groups imho.

Not only different representation, but different people in the elected positions. If the same people that are causing problems now are in those positions later, the wheel will fall back into the same old rut and the outcome will be like the song by the Who "meet the new boss, same as the old boss".
