Shipping firm ABX Air Inc. on Wednesday said it will spend about $190 million to buy and modify 11 Boeing 767-200 passenger airplanes currently owned by Delta Air Lines Inc.

ABX's commitment to purchase the planes comes less than two months after it bought another Boeing 767-200 from Delta in July. The agreement calls for delivery of six aircraft in 2006, two in 2007 and three in 2008.

Does anyone know the fate of the "Spirit of Delta" 767-200? Will it be kept flying or will it be mothballed and perhaps put on display?

The 'Spirit of Delta' will remain in service (the lone 767-200) .. I don't know what the plans are for 'post-retirement'.

I have been told that "Spirit" will not be sold, but placed on display in DL's flight museum. Hope it is true.

I certainly hope it is given prominent display somewhere in the DL world. Would be a great museum / learning center piece. Could be used to teach school kids about airlines and aviation as learning lab. This airplane would be a great addition to the Udvar/Hazey Smithsonian at IAD when its days carrying people are done.

Selling the Spirit would be a huge blow to DL employees; although there are fewer and fewer that helped buy that plane, it has only been 25 years since it was given to the company which means there are certainly plenty of people who bought the plane for DL and still work for them.

Even Ann Landers would agree that selling a gift while the giver watches is pretty tacky. The Spirit of Delta is a defining statement about airline labor relations and how they have been different at DL; even if it stops flying, which it probably should, the Spirit should be given a prominent resting place that honors the employees. Remember that Grinstein said that this, DL's 75th year, was dedicated to the employees.
