What's new

Donald Sterling Clippers owner alleged racist.

The initial decisions to suspend him were made within 72 hours (and over a weekend at that) of the tape going public. The amount of information that's come out since the ban was announced could have had an impact on the owners support for the ban (i.e. the guy that Gold-digger was hooking up with is also one the most likely candidates to buy the team, and had previous offers to buy the team repeatedly been turned down by Sterling).

Lawyers tend to be a cautious bunch. Sterling only needs 8 of the owners to back his continuing ownership. 16 of the 30 owners have indicated they want him forced out, leaving 13 wildcards.

If its a confidential vote Sterling might have a shot at keeping his team. If it's a public vote I would not think that Sterling has a chance.

I'm sure most of the owners got an initial indication based from NBA counsel on the limited information NBA had at the time. As more details emerge, and the lawyers from the owners start to look at the details and talk to each other, a different opinion may emerge.

Given his age and the amount of money, he also has nothing to lose. Money stops being a motivator when you've got enough of it.
Carl Ichon comes to mind as one of those people. They say he has Billions $$$$ that he's aqiuired, (stolen), over the years, and still isn't satisfied. Some call it image, or ego. Some say it's all about procieved power, or control.

I guess he does not think he has enough "toys".

Put in 40 years working on Aircraft, 45, if you count miliitary time, save , invest, build, and someday , just maybe, you'll have a few also! And yes, I've been blessed! I've made some good decisions, and bad ones. Retired, Two grow kids. Five Grandkids, Yes, I'd say I'm blessed! ------ But that's what life is all about, isn't it?

Do you think you could accomplish what you did working under today's AMT pay? To clarify it a bit more, do you think you could accomplish what you did if you were just now starting your career?

How much buying power have AMT's lost over the years (comparative to other jobs)?

The fact AMT's make less than a car mechanic when failures have a much heavier price is an atrocity.

If you worked in the same field for 40 years consider yourself very, very lucky. That is not the world we live in anymore. I have changed careers three times and I am only 37.

You should also consider yourself lucky you have a pension. That is something else few have anymore.  Even if they do, they usually get screwed out of it.

I am glad you are blessed; unfortunately the conditions under which you were blessed simply no longer exist.

The reason I bring this all up is because of the prevailing attitude of "He who has the most toys win" and the impact it has had on our society.

When you say things like that you sound just like Icahn.

One last question, how many times have AMT's passed contracts that sold their fellow mechanics right down the river (junior mechanics, srp's) so they could get a little something extra during your career?

You paint Icahn the devil but the truth is the people that voted for those contracts to screw over less senior people so they could get a little something are cut from the same cloth.

I honestly think American Airlines employees would do better with no UNION at all than a UNION like the TWU whose international officers have blatantly sold out its membership to pad their own pockets.

UNIONS in the airlines today are a form of entrapment. Nobody will leave for a competitor because nobody wants to start their seniority over.

Let me ask you this MCI transplant, how many contracts have you seen senior people pass that screwed over the rest because the company offered them an early out?

I am curious.

I also would like your opinion about something. If AMT's chose to have one UNION represent them all. A craft UNION, do you think companies should honor seniority if they hire an AMT from a competitor. That would solve the problem of seniority entrapment. It may also spawn competition to pay more. I mean why pay more when you know your knowledgeable, senior people are not going anywhere?

There are more than enough threads about the plight of the aircraft mechanic on each of the airline threads... do you really have to start hijacking things here in the Cooler?...

Don't disagree, which is why Silver will do whatever it takes to make sure the voting isn't private.

I did not read the contract. Is there anything in there that address the voting procedure?

Point taken.

Few outside the owners and their legal counsel have read the NBA constitution from what I've heard. Even Bob Costas had no idea what was in it until this week... NBA has now made it public:

http://mediacentral.nba.com/media/mediacentral/NBA-Constitution-and-By-Laws.pdf

Reading it, Silver may have violated his own authority... There's nothing which dictates the conduct of the owners, aside from a vague mention of conduct detrimental to the league.

Even there, the max penalty that can be assessed in that subsection appears to be $1M.

But hey, someone more used to reading contracts is free to pick it apart.

If Sterling didn't indeed violate the letter of the bylaws or constitution, then any vote made by the other owners could be called into question.

Am I the only one who has taken notice of Sterling's stone silence on the issue? Don't hear much from Silver either.

Perhaps both sides have Lawyered up?
