I was looking at the NPC Luncheon on youtube and Doug made a comment about flying on OAL... why would he fly OAL than US Airways to DC? and doe he always fly OAL????

Many airline executives fly on OAL when it is more convenient for them.

It's also not necessarily a bad idea. They get to see the service levels other airlines offer.

That said, I assume he flew PHX-WAS. The only other carrier with nonstop service to DCA/IAD is UA to IAD, unless he connected somewhere to fly into DCA.

I would not think he connected. Also... there is not much service on any airline that is any different than LCC. First Class has meals... and in coach they sell them. I am sure he knows what the competitors do as far as service. He made millions this quarter remember?

Perhaps he's afraid US employees might slip something into his beer  ....

..but seriously folks.....I think it's smart to survey the competition, virtually all of whom have better product...not that he cares about that.

I will say that US still has some of the best crews in the business however.....and any success is attributable to YOU guys and not to Dougie and his crew.

Art, with all due respect, this is a bit insulting to the "behind the scenes" employees of US Airways. All groups contribute to any success the airline enjoys, from the flight crews to the mechanics to the corporate folks (payroll, HR, IT, finance, marketing, investor relations, etc.). The company wouldn't function well if any one group dropped the ball. I realize you don't care for DP and his immediate direct reports, but please don't undermine the contributions of the other 32,000 employees.

USFlyer, Harry is right. I am complementing EVERY employee EXCEPT those in the "Executive Suite". I have said for years that US has the best rank and file employees of any airline, and I stand by that. I am sorry if you misinterpreted what I said.

Profits and numbers can be manipulated any way the accountants want to do it. I applaud US for its highest ever quarterly profit, but I wonder how much of it is smoke and mirrors at the end of the day. Creative accounting appears to be one of Doug's specialties. At least you can all enjoy a sizable profit sharing check!

My BEST to you ALL.....

I didn't read the numbers closely, but how much of that profit was attributed to the add-on fees that have cropped up in recent years like bags, choice <coach> seats, change fees, ticketing fees, etc.?

In 2011, the ancillary revenues (bag fees, change fees, etc) were almost eight times the net profit. The ancillary fee numbers lag, so we don't have good info yet for 2012.

IN 2009, the ancillary fees were equal to the total profit for the year. I am not surprised to see what FWAAA said for 2011. The inability of the industry to price itself correctly has given rise to the nickel and diming that we see today.

One way or another they get their money, and in many cases they should. What we really need however is more transparency. I think fare buckets could be totally rationalized to 4 or 5 fares, and pick your services--like AC and Airtran did, and like WN does..easy, and you know up front how much you're paying and what you are getting.
