What's new

Edwards AFB '09 Open House

My favorites are the old warbirds. Years ago at an airshow I had the opportinity to tour the inside of a B-17. While she was a tough old bird if you were a waist gunner there was little protection from the 20 and 30mm cannon fire from German fighters.

I know.....I was in a B-24 fuselage at Air and Space.....my pop flew them and B-29's.....he told me of extremely long flights and such in the 24 w/ no heat/pressurization......just sheepskin outerwear. 29 was a caddy. Nowdays its a cake walk....

I was at an air show and they had a P51, F15 and a Raptor. Old current and new.

My favorite place is still a P38. saw one at an air race. Very little to compare with seeing a P38 coming around a nylon 100.ft off the deck with the throtles on the fire wall.

Ever notice the knobs on the throttles are 'balls'?

Hence the term ' Balls to the wall '

It is a cock pit, where else would the balls be?

To your question, no, I never did notice that but it does make sense.

In WW II if you had the choice of being an infantryman or an aircrewman on a heavy bomber the better choice would have been the infantry. They had a lower casulty rate.

The pic of the C46 brought back some very fond memories....It seems like yesterday hearing the brakes making that sqeaking sound as a Rosey or TCA C46 comes in for a early morning auto charter....Those were the glory days of airfreight...
