Delta has served WAW in the past. Heck a new Delta could bring back BOS international flights. Just imagine the feed using both sides flights into BOS.
Its kind of sad that US carriers do not have many intl. flights out of BOS. 🙁
LH should be kissing US' feet for ending BOS-FRA so that that their second frequency would have less competition.
Unless you're referring to such major markets as BGR and HYA, there is no "feed" into BOS. The only cities served by mainline flights out of BOS are the hubs (CLT, PHL, PIT) and the Shuttle cities (LGA, DCA), with some minor service to the Caribbean, but only on weekends.
And even PHL, and especially PIT, are going more and more to RJ's.
Everything going south has to go through PHL. The spillover is then routed onto the Shuttle. So, during the Presidents Day vacation week, when the PHL flights are all oversold/cancelled/four hours late, etc., the $39 fare Griswolds headed for Walley World end up sitting next to the senator or businessperson who paid $800 for a Shuttle ticket.
In the meantime, JetBlue, Southwest, and Valujet are carrying boatloads of people to Florida non-stop (and getting them there the same day,
with their bags).
Lufthansa
was delighted when US Airways pulled down its BOS-FRA flight (which not only was full in the cabin every night, but regularly left cargo on the ramp after bulking out). The day after US stopped their flight, LH added a second one. For a while thereafter, they were operating
both a 747 and an A340
daily on the route.
Of course, you'll never see any BOS-Florida flights now. The whole point these days is to show as
little overlap as possible with Delta to try to fool the DOJ (while DL feversishly
adds flights on US routes, like JFK-PHX, for the opposite reason).
Totally agree with you about Boston. If this merger goes through, Boston should become a secondary hub as opposed to a focus city. Of course the Sand Castle may decide to streamline the operation and cut point to point flights.. Florida, etc. Hope not..
As I said before, I wouldn't be surprised to see Tempe cut out
all of Delta's point-to-point flying out of BOS. Even passengers flying from BOS to ATL will have to connect in PHL.
