A union representative was asked the other day about what types of concessions other than $$ might the company be looking for? One type that is being discussed is the cross-utilization of CSA/ESE work groups "aka" Station Agents. Any thoughts or comments regarding this possibility?

Why not just combine them into one work group, it sure makes it nice to be able to take a break from passengers if you work inside, and a break from climbing in bins if you work outside.

This is a *bad* idea!

Trying to combine the ESSC and COPFS books would be bad enough without having to deal with the nightmare of assimilating the workgroups.

The training costs would be huge (imagine trying to train 4000 reluctant ESE's), and the ill will would last for years.

Kev3188,

I absolutely agree with you, that it(bottom line) would make no sense, (to US) !!

But sadly, what we employees/retiree's think is dumb, and what management thinks is dumb, is(as you well know) as different as Apples and Oranges.

With that said, It would'nt surprise me one bit, if NW(or any management) tried it.
Knowing that(in NW's case) that DTW,MSP, MEM and IND, would vote yes for it, because it would'nt affect them, as long as hourly rates of pay, and pensions were'nt touched. A "language"/staffing % change in the contract, is all it would take to kiss "goodbye" stations like PVD,MHT,BDL, just to name a few(on the east coast), for IAM ESE's.

My (ex) AA tried crap like this years ago.
I don't see it so much as cross utilizing "both" work groups, as I see it as, moving ESE's out, and making the "inside" folks, work inside, and "out".

With the exception of a small percentage, I beleive most employees are in the position they're in for a reason. Most ESE's don't want anything to do with CSA work and most CSA's are not physically able to do the job of an ESE day in and day out. I also agree with Kevin3188 and NHBB's, as I often do.

Agreed 100%. For those that yearn to do both? Well, there's already 4 hour rule stations; just pick one, bid in, and enjoy!

Just my .02.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't this essentially already done at stations where the "four-hour rule" applies?

In "four-hour rule" stations all work is performed by the CSA work group only. No ESE,s.

JetClipper,

Allow me to ASSUME that you meant that there was "already" a system in place, to deal with the "potential" issues being discussed here.
(If that was not your intention, I apologize)

From what I'm hearing, the Company has ALREADY signaled to the unions, that they want to CHANGE the "4 hour" rule language, and increase it so as to allow the agent group to do work already being done by IAM represented ESE's, in smaller/(read borderline stations), that the present contract forces NWA to staff the ramp with higher paid ESE's

An example of "some" stations that "could" change, might be PVD,BDL,MHT,BWI,IAD,BIS,MDW just to name a few!

RETIRED/THANK GOD !!
