Police? Which police agency contract authorizes its officers to sleep on the clock?

I get firefighters, doctors (interns forced to work a week at a time) and flight crews. But police?

Little (sorry) has been said, but I believe catching crew chief Jimmy Rae, TULE's certified old fart, napping had something to do with this resolution.

They couldn't very well fire these people for sleeping and not fire the older fellow, now could they?

I like and agree with Bob Owens assessment that a little power nap now and again is not an offense to be terminated for. I think that it is something that need to be watched very closely so as not to start a trend. Management did the right thing by not letting this go any further.

Yes and No. From what I heard the management member who put a stop to this has been terminated or suspended because he refused to lie for the company.

Management had no case and the union had 40 guys who were going to testify for the guys who were terminated.

As far as I'm concerned the company, with the exception of the guy who refused to purjur himself, already went too far. The company put these guys through a lot, and it was unwaranted and unethical.

I work in fleet. When we have OSO or don't have a flight I don't grab a freakin broom and start sweeping the dump. All of these people have assignments to complete during there shifts. Sometimes it may encompass the full 8 hours sometimes it might not. What is the big deal for them to take a nap if they remain on premises!? Should they sit in a chair twiddling there thumbs? Lets see if I was one of these guys. My assignments finished, oh well. I'm going to hold onto my wrench standing with one foot in front ready to jump if suddenly an aircraft appears in the hanger from AA's magic teleporter.

Anyone against these guys GET A LIFE. I've worked at LGA and I was on midnight cleaning for a little while. When the work was done you couldn't even find the crickets that hopped in the door when we came to work at 10pm. You're all a bunch of phonys. Any one of you who had the same job would do exactly the same thing and don't try to tell me otherwise. These people aren't security guards and IT IS detrimental to there health.

To all of you MX professionals on here. Don't even listen to people that have never walked in your shoes and never will or can. And please tell me these guys got there back pay as well?

FA Mikey
Well there are studies that also conclude there is no detriment to health.

Really? done by whom? Can you send me a link?

sure no problem.

Still looking for the link that says that working Mids is not bad for your health?

Gee, let's see,

Forcing your body to stay awake when it is programmed to sleep.................how can that be detrimental to one's health <_< ????

When you work the Line and all your work is done, you usually would help your coworkers if they had a heavy workload. If that was not the case then you relax and wait for the morning departures. Yes, sleeping does go on but it's more like snoozing in a chair as opposed to a bed! Most managers were cool about it as long as they didn't have any problems arising from it.

Base Mtc is an entirey different story. Nobody sleeps in overhaul. If you do then you are not doing your work. See? BIG difference here for all those outside of the Mtc Dept.

BTW, How many of you Stews, Crews, Rampies, Res Agents and whoever else have tried to stay up all night after working for hours in sub-freezing temps/darkness? How about hot and humid environments? Getting soaked in near freezing rain? High winds? Swarms of bugs? Snowstorms where you are looking for your tools under the snow??? That's what Aircraft Mechanics do on a routine basis to keep the planes airworthy. And you are going to throw stones about some sleep while knowing NOTHING about what we put up with  ???

Stick to your own department's business and leave the MOST IMPORTANT individuals in the airline business alone! Just remember this.........No plane = No flight = NO AIRLINE  Think about that for a while!

Its not like this is a union thing either. Many years ago when I did overnight work at New York Air, which was non-union we openly slept in the ready room that was used for pilots, FAs/gate agents etc. Everyone knew about it and nothing was ever said.

Actually some support has come from other work groups, lets not let a few quacks have us start pointing fingers at each other.

Hey E-Trons, you are not the MOST IMPORTANT individuals in the airline biz. We're all a part of one big team. I support the maintenance professionals in this matter 150%. If you want to flame at someone you should hit the peeps in Mgmt and the outsiders not your fellow brothers and sisters who are all in the same sinking ship thanks to corporate greed and avarice. And thanks for the reminder also Mr Owens

weAAsles,

My post was not aimed at individuals such as yourself. I do appreciate your support and I would return the favor. My post was aimed at the likes of those mentioned below.

I cannot tell you all the times I was talked down to by flight crew members and even gate agents! These instances occurred while I was doing my job......working on the airplane during a turnaround. I was even told the stupid mechanics were going to ruin the airline if they go on strike....by a planner. When we did strike, we got the finger from many rampies and non union personnel. Heck, the cops were even hassling us!! On another occasion (on company business) I even had a gate agent threaten to write me up for bringing my bag to the gate per the ticket agent's instructions. The reason was that I was going to delay the flight by my actions.......incidentally the plane was being de-iced at the gate while I was getting reamed in front of all the pax!!

My point? There are always those that stick their nose in where it does not belong. And that my friend, REALLY pisses me off. So please accept my apology for not being more clear on my previous post. Those that should take offense know who they are.

Best wishes to all the good folks at AA.

E.

Hey Bob, please do tell your qualifications for judging the workloads of nurses & firemen?

I got recalled back in february after being layed-off for several years. I dragged this piece of crap job on my back for so long thinking it was better than it really is. Although it was financially devistating to my family after the first lay-off, I went back to school and retrained... we adjusted. Like a damn fool, I came back thinking I would actually give this company a second chance. Needless to say, reality set in quickly after being back for a few months. This company is POISON!!! Plain and simple. It can turn a easy going man into someone whos family doesn't even recognize anymore.

Therefore, I quit this week.... I went out and found another job... No more airplanes. No more TWU BS scams. No more backstabbin managers... It feels liberating people! It really does.

The only thing that made this company worth working for was the "perks" involved after your work is done. I've been around long enough to see at least several people from ALL the work groups dozing on more than one occasion. Including management! Take whats given to you while you can people. Screw all those bootlickers who can't get enough company kool-aid. They are pretty easy to recognize.
