Hey JC: Just like thousands of others (I'm sure) I'm willing to go work for a financially questionable employer, for most likely less than market salary and benes, for the trade of FREE AIRFARE WORLDWIDE. I'd rather not get more specific as we all know airlines monitor these sites heavily. Needless to say, if I get an interview and offer, I'd evaluate it completely. Even I am not going to commit career/financial suicide just for some free airfare...

Some advice:
A) The airfare, although pretty darn cheap, ain't free. It is a good deal, tho', and what's better IMHO is the flexibility the travel bene's provide (you aren't chained to a particular itinerary, and changing plans is very easy.
2) If you're thinking of travelling hither and yon, I hope you have a bunch of friends or relatives in desirable destinations. Hotels, et. al, still ain't cheap.
iii) You will likely have only two to three weeks vacation. How much travel do you think you'll be able to do?
IV) If you're thinking "weekend travel", remember that you're flying standby, in order of seniority. With load factors being what they are, it can be extremely difficult to fly on a Sunday (especially if you have a family)
E) Last, as you are undoubtedly aware, plane fares are pretty cheap these days. As I say to my wife: "X thousand dollars/year can buy an AWFUL lot of plane tickets". Seriously appraise just how much the flight benefits would be worth to you.
Obviously, UAL (like the entire industry) has a lot of issues, and I'll chime in to agree with others that there are things about the company that leave a lot to be desired. Working for a company in BK can be a challenge, and they certainly don't seem to assigning any priority to accomodating their workers. Quite the opposite, in fact.
But hey, good luck and more power to you. If it makes sense for you, go for it. Just don't get all wide-eyed about the travel benes and overlook the rest of the package.
-synchronicity, who doesn't work for UAL but whose wife does, and we haven't been on a plane since August of 2003.
