Hi folks. Found a great job posted at UA and I'm looking for every conceivable edge I can get to secure an interview.

On that note, can anyone tip me to a UA HR phone number @ Elk Grove that goes to an actual human; no answer services or automated systems? I actually know the name of the HR person working the position, but don't want to broadcast their name here. Thanks in advance!!

FCFlyer,

I applaud your interest in coming to work for a company that still has a considerable cloud of uncertainty over its' head. I'm curious, if you don't mind my asking, what department are you looking to work in?

As for getting hold of an actual warm, breathing body in HR, good luck with that. I'd imagine most are terribly busy continuing to ignore exit interviews and turning a blind eye to the lousy middle and lower management that is still prevalent throughout the company.

Hey JC: Just like thousands of others (I'm sure) I'm willing to go work for a financially questionable employer, for most likely less than market salary and benes, for the trade of FREE AIRFARE WORLDWIDE. I'd rather not get more specific as we all know airlines monitor these sites heavily. Needless to say, if I get an interview and offer, I'd evaluate it completely. Even I am not going to commit career/financial suicide just for some free airfare...

Whatever you do, if you get an interview...NEVER mention that you want the job for travel benefits! That is a huge strike against you. At least it was at the airline I used to work at.

Did you know that at UA you travel by senority? With load factors through the roof today, you will be stuck many times. It's not worth it to fly standby, IMHO

Is this a joke?

FC FLYER Says, "Even I am not going to commit career/financial suicide just for some free airfare... "

Better get the skinny on UniTED flight benefits, they are NOT FREE! They rose the rates at what emplyees pay for travel right after filing BK.

Hey Fish, where do you get this stuff? You still building your boat models in the non-ventilated part of the basement again?

Run, do not walk, run...as fast as you can as far as you can from this loser!

You tell 'em how it is at UniTED spacewaitress. Tell them that it would be one of the biggest mistakes of thier life to go to work for UniTED (AKA UAL HELL). B)

Space,

Just curious..... do you currrently work for UAL?

I do, I'm a flight attendant. I can't imagine coming to work for a bankrupt company for flight benefits (that are harder and harder to use and more expensive than ever).

To each his own.

I agree that someone wanting to go to work for ANY airline just for the travel benefits might need a lil metal evaluation.

I do have a problem with your original statement though. If United is such a loser (your words) then why are you still working here? Why don't you take your own advice and run away?

Not trying to flame or incite, just trying to understand why people can be so miserable at their job (be it United or anywhere else, even non airline related) but don't leave the job that is making them so miserable.

Fish left and he is still miserable. Time has done nothing to heal his perceived wounds.

BOXER,

I am ANYTHING but miserible, at F9 I love to come to work EVERYDAY! I was MISERIBLE when I worked at UAL HELL, I couldn't stand to go to work there. Now I just feel sorrow for YOU ALL that still remain there and continue to bend over and take it in the shorts, AMAZING  . I don't know how you can continue to keep doing this? You did it for EFLOP, and 7/8 years later you do it again. Do you have no pride AT ALL B) ? Hell they F&^%ED me on the EFLOP and I knew enough was enough and got while the getting was good. But you guys all just say oh well, I need the JOB AMAZING! 🙄

Some advice:

A) The airfare, although pretty darn cheap, ain't free. It is a good deal, tho', and what's better IMHO is the flexibility the travel bene's provide (you aren't chained to a particular itinerary, and changing plans is very easy.

2) If you're thinking of travelling hither and yon, I hope you have a bunch of friends or relatives in desirable destinations. Hotels, et. al, still ain't cheap.

iii) You will likely have only two to three weeks vacation. How much travel do you think you'll be able to do?

IV) If you're thinking "weekend travel", remember that you're flying standby, in order of seniority. With load factors being what they are, it can be extremely difficult to fly on a Sunday (especially if you have a family)

E) Last, as you are undoubtedly aware, plane fares are pretty cheap these days. As I say to my wife: "X thousand dollars/year can buy an AWFUL lot of plane tickets". Seriously appraise just how much the flight benefits would be worth to you.

Obviously, UAL (like the entire industry) has a lot of issues, and I'll chime in to agree with others that there are things about the company that leave a lot to be desired. Working for a company in BK can be a challenge, and they certainly don't seem to assigning any priority to accomodating their workers. Quite the opposite, in fact.

But hey, good luck and more power to you. If it makes sense for you, go for it. Just don't get all wide-eyed about the travel benes and overlook the rest of the package.

-synchronicity, who doesn't work for UAL but whose wife does, and we haven't been on a plane since August of 2003.
